Animal Webaction visited the site 03 July 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"Summer has come and with it an explosion of the shelter's population: currently, there are 400 dogs. People are still not sterilising their dogs, so we have more puppies, and now that the pandemic is less intense, they are going on holidays, leaving their dogs behind just as they used to do.
We feel desperate, it is like we're in the Never-Ending Story! The funds we manage to get are highly insufficient given the number of dogs we have and we need more food, at least the minimum amount needed to keep them alive!
Instead, we already have to ration the food... I have got one week of kibble left only, and I am concerned that I will soon get to the day when I have no solution left. The dogs would starve to death. Imagine looking at somebody you love dying..."
"Dogs are already losing weight, we see them getting weaker and losing energy. It is a constant and major worry, we are already facing fights and deaths regularly, we don’t want to see the dogs getting skinnier or they will have even more trouble staying calm and fighting diseases.
We have many puppies whose immune system could be compromised, as well as older dogs and dogs in distress with severe healh issues. Since kibble is our first priority, we are being forced to forego care and to reduce the quantity of food we get them.
As much as I would like to keep the shelter open for as long as Romanian dogs need us, I really fear that we will soon be unable to cope anymore. If we had enough food monthly, we wouldn’t be so scared for the future."
"Hunter is 8 years old. He is part of the 19 dogs we have rescued from the public shelter of Giurgiu, which permanently keeps up to 500 dogs in cages... Most of the dogs at Giurgiu will stay there their whole life, with no hope of ever being adopted and a high risk of passing away there.
We don't know anything about Hunter's past, but we have noticed that he is a bit scared of humans and doesn’t like to be petted. Medically speaking, he has got only three legs, probably from being hit by a car as is so often the case.
This missing leg makes life difficult for him in the shelter and he is more vulnerable, as the slightest movement drains his strength. It would be inconceivable to have to underfeed him."
"The money and the food are the two main obstacles we face. Even if we can count on the City Hall's help, which provides us with some food, we are still short by 1.5 tons of kibble each month that we must finance ourselves.
Total expenses add up to several thousands of euros monthly... Such amount of money isn't covered by donations, and we can't hope to lower the number of dogs as there are fewer adoptions at this time of the year! We need food more than ever, so the dogs and the shelter can survive."
"There used to be a public pound in Pascani, where the conditions were awful. When it was closed, 6 years ago, we decided to build a new shelter in which the dogs would be actually cared for.
Without us, dogs would die alone on the streets or they would get killed… Instead, last month we reached our 3000th adoption in six years! And people are happy that there are not as many dogs on the streets as there used to be.
I now hope that we'll get even more adoptions, and that people from Romania will embrace their responsibilities towards dogs. When you save one dog's life, you are making a difference, and we are saving many lives."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We have placed money and food boxes at the vet and at the supermarket, but the donations we get represent only a tiny fraction of what we need, and generally speaking we have just a few supporters locally.
This is why we also try our best to activate our online community. They do help a lot with emergencies like surgeries, and they sometimes sponsor dogs, unfortunately we know we are over-soliciting them and that they have reached their capacity to help.
Without further help, we won't be able to keep up with all the needs, this is why we rely so much on this campaign."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
