Animal Webaction visited the site 19 August 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"The situation for street cats is really complex, there are more and more of them to feed and care for due to the worsening health situation. With the curfew and the almost total absence of tourism, there are fewer restaurants open, fewer customers, and therefore no food in the streets. They are subjected to overwhelming heat and dehydration, parasites proliferate...
We can't afford to help them all because we don't have the resources. We're making do with what we can, and we're feeding about 70 of them right now. They are clearly not eating their fill, we have had to reduce the portions over the last few weeks, and we only have a few days of kibble left, after that we will have to stop feeding them if nothing changes.
That's my biggest worry, not being able to feed them, which will just lead to their death. Someone has to feed them, they need it. Helping these cats on the streets is too much work and suffering, our shoulders are not broad enough, we need additional help."
"We found Monica in the street, very emaciated, a week ago. We don't know anything about her history before we picked her up, we assume she was probably abandoned by her owners...
Her condition is very worrying, she is very thin and can hardly move. She is sociable and cuddly, but given the situation we can see that she is very affected. She absolutely needs kibble given her condition."
"We have 115 cats in the shelter, and 25 more in the nursery, we are running at overcapacity which is clearly a problem. The situation is really difficult, there are a lot of distressed cases, many are emaciated, injured, blind... We try to do our best to give them their treatments, to take good care of them and to feed them as much as possible.
Here again, we have had to ration them for several weeks, they eat about 70% of the daily ration they should have. It's hard enough under these circumstances to ensure a good recovery, and our stock of kibble is running low, we will soon run out.
Not knowing if we will be able to feed everyone, and regularly, is a huge anxiety, it's a very disturbing and frustrating feeling. I'm even considering releasing the cats if we don't find a solution, I can't keep them here and not feed them, it's just impossible."
"Flash is a young street cat, who we picked up at the shelter a fortnight ago. He contracted coryza, which affected him badly and left him in a sad state.
He had to undergo a bilateral enucleation (NDRL: his two eyes had to be removed), he remains very tired and thin. Survival on the streets is unthinkable for him given his handicap, the shelter is the only option at the moment, but he absolutely needs kibble to get by."
"Before the pandemic, we were getting donations, and tourists kept coming to Marrakech, so things were more stable. Now, with the drop in tourism, the curfew, the restrictions etc., there is less work for almost everyone, and therefore less donations. Concretely, only 5% of the costs are covered by donations at the moment.
I have a lot of debts with suppliers and individuals. This is of course for food, but also for the rent for the land, the building work etc... I'm at a stage where I have to pay off these credits first before I can resume any order.
And it's a vicious circle, as we've barely been able to feed the cats for weeks, we're not doing enough sterilisations and so we can't regulate their numbers either. I have sacrificed everything for these animals, no rest, no social life, no holidays, there are not many of us. I really want to ask people to please give us some help, no matter how small it is."
"The difference we make on a daily basis is that we prevent these animals from proliferating thanks to our sterilisation actions, which means fewer cats on the streets and more comfort for humans, but we also care for and treat these animals, which means less suffering for them, and less disease propagation.
We are known in Marrakech and throughout Morocco for our rescues and sterilisation campaigns, but we have very little support. I feel that we are still a long way from turning Marrakech into a low-animal-proliferation city unfortunately, but I hope we will get help to continue."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Morocco, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"We are still waiting for answers from several federations and foundations to help us, but the situation is not at all reassuring to be honest. We keep contacting organisations, to no avail.
We are doing fundraising, we have Teaming for example, it's not working as well as we would like to, I don't know why to be honest.
It's an unprecedented crisis, the whole world is affected and is afraid so gives less, everyone is afraid for themselves and that's understandable, I have a lot of respect for the people who keep supporting us despite the crisis, I have a lot of respect for them. Animal WebAction's campaigns are essential for the survival of the cats in our care."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
