Animal Webaction visited the site 19 August 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"We have 158 dogs at the shelter at the moment, we do our very best to collect dogs from the street and bring them here because we know that if we don't, they'll end up being killed by one of the local hunters... Besides, if we don't do pick them up, nobody else will bring them to the shelter.
People here much prefer to dump dogs in faraway places, or put puppies in plastic bags and throw them in the river. It seems that for the vast majority of people, it is less of an inconvenience to kill a dog rather than to bring it to the shelter. The local conscience is just not right...
I am frustrated, I honestly can’t do more for these dogs than I already am and soon they will be others who will need help, there always here. Unfortunately, my main concern in helping them all is the constant fear of lacking food. It is definitely our n°1 problem. If we deplete the food stocks, the consequences will be sickness, denutrition, starvation and eventually death... I can't even begin to imagine it and I am really afraid."
"Many dogs in the shelter are particularly weak, we've brought them here so they could get a chance to survive... These dogs need supplements and good quality food so their health conditions don't deteriorate.
Unfortunately, right now we only have enough kibble for a few more days, so we've already had to start mixing the kibble with some leftover bread to try and make it last a bit longer. This lower quality diet is causing the dogs problems, they eat less than usual and a lot of them have diarrhea, they are weaker.
Each and every single one of the 158 souls here count on me to feed them, food it is the most important thing to them...I have devoted my whole life to this shelter, I’m aging, I have some medical issues, but my only hope is that I can gather enough resources to buy food for my dogs..."
"We found Piki abandoned in front of the shelter when she was a 2-month-old puppy... She has unfortunately never had the chance to be adopted and is now one of the oldest females at the shelter.
She has many health issues, she is blind and has trouble walking, she spends most of her day in her enclosure, she is sad and in pain. If we run out of food she will undoubtedly be one of the first ones to die... Food is a matter of survival for her."
"We have several issues at the shelter, the enclosures are in really bad shape for example but the lack of food remains our biggest problem. There is enough food on the market, but we don't have the funds to buy it...
The municipality has lowered its aid to us; the only help we receive is from one Dutch organisation that helps our shelter and others in the region. When it comes to individual donations, they happen once or twice per year maximum, and they are not significant unfortunately.
All these actions only help in the short term and aren't sufficient to help us pay for all the expenses. I have debts all over, for vet bills, electricity, fuel... I truly hope people will see my struggle and provide help for this shelter and most importantly for the dogs that live here."
"I started devoting my life to animals in 2004, at the time, there were a lot of dogs that needed help but no shelter in the area. My role is to coordinate everything that happens at the shelter, from adoptions, to veterinary to food, ... I basically do everything.
I'm very proud of having built and managed to keep this shelter alive for many years. I'm even prouder to have found homes for hundreds and hundreds of dogs; that's ultimately what is giving me the strength to continue.
Unfortunately, I also have to admit that I'm afraid that my age and illness will eventually force me to close this shelter... I don’t know how long I will manage to struggle with all the problems we have, especially given that there is nobody younger willing to continue this type of work..."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"The local population does not support my actions, quite the opposite actually. People here mock and direspect me for doing this kind of work. Here, the people who kill dogs think they are helping the community by doing so, need I say more?
There is no organisation other than my own to take care of dogs in the region. When they come here, dogs find a safe haven, where they can learned to be loved, respected, and hopefully find a forever home with caring owners.
In the meantime, I'm responsible for their well-being but as one person, I can't do everything unfortunately. I have tried to reach out everyone for help but no one has a sense for this situation. If this campaign does not succeed, I'm afraid dogs will starve and eventually die."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
