"I currently take care of 128 dogs, and am always on full capacity, as soon as a dog goes out for adoption, another one takes his place. My biggest problem is the uncertainty generated by the need of providing high quantities of kibbles on a regular basis, that is the main issue that I cannot control on my own.
Right now, I’m left with 20 bags of kibble that won’t last longer than the beginning of September, I don't know what will happen after. Lately, donations have decreased due to the pandemic, the funds of the shelter are running out and I simply don’t have enough funds to buy more.
If I can’t find the kibble I need, the dogs in my care will suffer. Lack of food makes them aggressive, they might start fighting each other, and it also impacts their health. I’ll have to try redirecting them to other shelters, but all the places I know are overcrowded and unable to help. I feel stressed and powerless, I have a lot of will and courage, but I’m just a simple person with an average income and limited power, I need all the help I can get."
"There are no other shelters in Mereni or nearby towns, the closest one is in Constanta, but it’s overcrowded with dogs and poorly funded by local authorities. Unfortunately, this is an area where people abandon dogs every day. Without my help, their faith is uncertain. They usually die from starvation, hit by cars, or even by the hand of angry people who don’t want them around their houses...
In the last few months, I've had to make room for several dogs rescued from public shelters. They were poorly treated, sick, and malnourished, so I was their only hope. I’m glad I managed to help them, but this situation puts more stress on my limited resources. I need to continue helping more dogs, but in order for this to be possible I have to make sure the ones that are already in my care have everything they need.
Even if I have 128 dogs in my care, I feel powerless because there are many more out there that I cannot help. It is ironic that I have enough space to build enclosures and house more dogs, but I don’t have the necessary kibble to feed them. Lack of food is what prevents me to take care of even more dogs in distress, and why I really need this campaign to succeed because I’m overwhelmed with worry for these dogs."
"Ursu and his siblings were living on a farm. The farmer wasn’t pleased with Ursu’s friendly behavior and wanted to make him aggressive, so he started to tie him to the back of his tractor and pull him around the yard. At some point, Ursu managed to break the chain and released himself. He tried to attack the farmer and his wife, who called the veterinarian in order to euthanize him. The vet refused to do it and called us instead. Ursu was so scared and agitated that we had to tranquilize him, we brought him to the shelter.
Ursu is now 8 years old, he only tolerates a few people due to his difficult past and what he has been through. We cannot put him to adoption because he’s still traumatized. Sadly, I am aware that just like Ursu some of the dogs I rescued will never be adopted because they are highly traumatized. They will stay in my shelter until the end of their lives, and I need to be able to feed them."
"The shelter’s funds come from donations, my own salary, and fundraising campaigns we conduct on social media. The sources of income have always been the same, but before the pandemic donations were more consistent.
I am in good relations with local authorities, they allow me to build more enclosures and even help me with workforce when needed. I also receive help from the local veterinarian, who participated in our spay/neuter campaigns. However, local authorities have no funds for stray or abandoned dogs...
So far, I managed to get by with the funds that I had, managing the situation for short periods of time using my own salary, but I have zero security for the medium and long term. I gave up everything to build this shelter and I will continue to do so for as long as my health allows me to, I just hope I will receive some additional help that I sorely need."
"13 years ago, I was in a bad place emotionally. One day I met a sick and hungry black dog at the train station. He followed me home for several days, but was too scared to approach. I started to feed him regularly, until I gained his trust. I named him Negri. I wasn’t able to take him home because I already had many dogs, but I nourished him back to health and found a good family to adopt him. I consider that Negri saved me and gave me a new purpose in life, and I feel that my duty is to honor his memory.
My work makes a lot of difference since I have the only shelter in the area. I take abandoned and injured dogs and nourish them back to health. I try to give them a voice and make their stories public. I put a serious amount of effort into raising awareness in the community, and organising spay/neuter campaigns in order to stop this kind of tragedies, simply hoping that one day my shelter won’t be needed anymore. Until then I would do anything for my dogs'survival."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Romania, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Our country is full of abandoned dogs and all of them need food and care. All shelters are looking for help. It is a tough period of time and organizations that usually offer their help are overwhelmed with food and medicine requests.
I've reached out to a UK organization and asked for help with food. They’ve helped me in the past already, but right now they are overwhelmed with requests and cannot step in. Sometimes I get help from people abroad, who send me toys, blankets and kibble, but that unfortunately is far from covering our needs.
I hope things will change in the future, but we’re still going through a rough period of time. Food is the only resource that is limited and that prevents me from taking care of other strays in distress, and a worry for the ones in my shelter. This situation creates constant stress for me and anyone involved."
