Animal Webaction visited the site 05 September 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"We currently have 252 dogs at the shelter, whenever one gets adopted, there's another one to take their place, it’s a permanent cycle. There are always more dogs in need of help and we can't just pass by them... But unfortunately our current lack of resources prevents us from buying more kibble.
Sometimes people bring some food but it’s a drop in the ocean with the amount of dogs we have... Right now we only have enough kibble for 3-4 days maximum and it's very low-quality kibble, the only type we managed to buy given the circumstances...
The situation is drastic, we are barely surviving and on the verge...We're worried that the dogs will become ill, thinner, angrier. We try our best to feed and cure these dogs but without food it will be impossible to keep them healthy and calm, it will be a catastrophe. I haven't been sleeping well these last few days, thinking about all the possible consequences of this food shortage..."
"We save ill animals, old dogs, puppies who are thrown away, who are lost and who don’t know how to live in the streets. We work our hardest for those poor dogs who have nothing and we take any opportunity to feed and save a starving animal.
Unfortunately, as much as we would like to help every abandoned dog in the streets of Sochi, we can't, due to our current lack of food and space.. It saddens us to say, but the vast majority of people here won't help these dogs either, they are mostly indifferent to their fate...Many of these animals only have two options : to die or to live at our shelter.
Our current inability to help more dogs in need gives me anxiety. I’m afraid that dogs will be hit by cars, that they will starve to death...This campaign is absolutely essential to enable us to save more dogs."
"We found Portos running frantically near the city airport. He was completely disoriented and one of his eye was gouged out, we're unsure of what happened....
We have now removed with eye surgically and he is doing better, he is affectionate. Still, Portos is on the older side, his health remains fragile, he's definitely among the most bulnerable dogs at the shelter. He needs kibble for this health not to deteriorate. Without kibbles and without our protection, he is unlikely to survive."
"Before the pandemic I had a successful business in concert management. I could pay for 60-70% of the shelter’s bills myself every month. But ever since the end of 2019, my business has completely stopped and I'm not able to finance anything from my own pocket anymore.
I rely on donations entirely to run the shelter and although we are lucky enough to have regular supporters, animal-lovers in Russia are mostly not rich, so they're only able to help a little bit. They bring some pills, 1-2 bags of kibbles, but it’s not enough to support over 250 dogs.
We have many debts, especially to the veterinary clinic, as many of our dogs require surgeries, care, treatments, drugs... But our most pressing issue right now is definitely food. This kibble collection is our only chance to have sufficient help for our dogs and have a period of stability ."
"There is no public service in our country or in our city that cares for abandoned dogs, at all! There never was. There is no free veterinarian clinic, no public shelter, and the government is not planning to open one.
There is an issue when it comes to animal welfare awareness among the population. Many owners don’t want to castrate their animals, which results in many more puppies and stray animals. Luckily, there are some private individuals who care about animals, and I am lucky to be surrounded by people who very much fit that description.
Together we helped adopt more than 500 dogs, I’m just extremely happy for them. I’m happy we managed to save them from bad conditions and I’m glad they can enjoy a new life. It’s impossible to overvalue a moment when a dog, who has been living at the shelter for so long, finally finds a loving home."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Russia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We conduct online fundraising on social networks. People usually help when they see a blooded, wounded dog in agonising pain ready to die in 5 minutes... But when we deal with kibbles issues, we don’t see the same support. People tend to think that food is not urgent.
Luckily enough, we can count on the support of two foreign organisations that help us with adoptions. They promote our dogs and find them new loving families, this help is invaluable to us.
There are still 252 dogs at the shelter currently however, and all of them need to eat. We truly hope we can count on the help of true animal lovers once again, to help us out of this rough patch."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
