Animal Webaction visited the site 06 September 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"There are currently 184 dogs at the shelter, that's 100 more dogs than last year, before the pandemic broke out... A lot of people still believe their dog can give them COVID... But the biggest issue remains people who refuse to sterilize their dogs, they just don't understand the need for it... But when their dogs mate with others, they abandon them with their puppies in the middle of nowhere, or directly throw them in my yard.
We are trying to give the dogs enough food, but now they are simply too many. We keep begging for leftovers at our local restaurants and sometimes they give something, but it's a lot less than before. We've had to start reducing the dogs' portions 2 weeks ago, to stretch it out. And we're giving them bread, just to calm down the hunger...
Now we're down to 80 kilos left, which is only enough for one day... Our biggest fear is the imminent lack of food. A dog can eat from a broken bowl, but if there is no food they become aggressive and they start to fight each other...Without kibble we can’t feed and protect these dogs, I made a promise to myself that I will always take care of this little souls and I’m really afraid I can’t keep it!
"Street dogs have to face all kinds of terrible situations, they are regularly abused by people, beaten, hung, ran over or poisoned...The ones who survive feed themselves from the bins, but it's barely enough and most importantly, it's not adapted to their health, many actually end up dying from infectious diseases.
Strays are also subject to being caught by the municipality workers, the "dogcatchers", who then bring them to the public pound. The public pound has a capacity of 200 dogs, they euthanize every single dog over that number...We have to take them out of there.
All the dogs we've rescued so far, whether it be on the streets or from the pound, would have starved or would have been killed if we hadn't intervened. There are dogs that look into my eyes and ask for help. Other dogs are so afraid that when we come to their rescue we can’t even touch them, they are terrified...Unfortunately, without food, we can't save any of them...I know what will happen to them if we don't find a solution and it's simply unbearable."
"Aragorn has been at the shelter for one week, a lady called me about him. He was abused, thrown in a tar pond and let there to die...He was in death danger, but we managed to rescue him in the last moment.
It's unbeliavable that in 2021, there are still people doing things like this to animals... It's beyond appalling. Despite what has happened to him, Aragorn is still very friendly and loving towards humans...
We've put him under treatment for tar toxicity, vitamins for liver. His health is fragile and he is under powerful meds. He needs good food like kibble to be able to hold on."
"Our biggest problems to come are the lack of food, the lack of meds. We also have to prepare for really low temperatures with hay and more dog houses as the number of dogs increased a lot. Unfortunately, I can’t fund all this by myself. I’m retired, my real estate business is failing, I don’t have money to pay for everything.
A lot of people in Romania have lost their jobs as well and now it’s really hard for them to donate. Generally speaking here in Romania, I would say that there are people that appreciate my actions, but most actually hate and judge me for helping dogs and not children. Our mayor fits that description as well, he wants to euthanise all stray dogs. We try to educate people, but feel like we still have a long way...
Local support is nonexistent, but people continue to bring us dogs all the time...Our veterinary costs are escalating, we have many debts. But our biggest priority right now is to get food for our dogs. Because without it, we cannot achieve anything it"
"I am the president of the “Axi hope” Pascani, started in 2009 to help the stray dogs from our city. At first I helped the dogs from the public pounds only, but because of the increasing number of stray dogs, in 2018 I bought this building and transformed it into the shelter.
I now take care of over 200 dogs and there are a lot more to be rescued... I can't watch it happen, I have to act! Rescuing animals is my calling. My health is not very good, but I still go and save them, it's necessary.
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Before the pandemic, we had more people donating and we also had less dogs. Now, the number of dogs under our care has exploded, but our resources did not follow. There are very few donations coming from Romania, a bit more from France, but still not enough to cover all our needs.
We haven't had any adoption in the last 3 months either because people were gone on holiday. All these things are putting a great strain of our abilities to help the dogs. It's really hard to provide for them. We absolutely need your help to keep going."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
