Animal Webaction visited the site 15 September 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"Every day, I receive calls requesting that a dog be given shelter and veterinary care. Unfortunately I don't have the necessary conditions and capacity to shelter them all. So we feed all of the stray dogs we know have been abandoned, there are about 50 at this moment. Lack of food and veterinary care are among the most serious issues dogs face on the street.
The situation is deteriorating, there are too many difficulties and abandoned dogs for us to handle. My biggest and most important problem is food, my main concern is to know how to feed so many dogs. I have 180 kilograms of kibble left, that could be enough for five days, and we just don't have the funds to buy more kibble.
If we can't feed them, dogs on the street will attack people, domestic animals, they will get sick. Dogs in particular distress will not survive. Plus, we are the only registered association in Srebrenica dedicated to the humane care of abandoned dogs, if we cannot care for them anymore, shinters paid by Sarajevo will come to capture them and bring them to their asylum, where they are killed. I'm feeling terrible and helpless."
"Rale was left on the street along with his brothers by his former owner, they are very young dogs.
Until now, we've managed to bring them regular meals and keep them rather healthy, they are doing ok with the other dogs on the street. We hope to be able to make some room for Rale and his siblings in the shelter eventually, but it is impossible for now as we have too many dogs already.
We need kibble to be able to care for them while they are the streets as they can't fend for themselves, but also once we manage to bring them to our shelter."
"The shelter's capacity is completely full, we currently have 138 dogs. We have many new dogs, mostly mothers with puppies that people leave at the shelter's front door.
If the dogs in the shelter do not have food, they can attack each other, they will become aggressive. My greatest fear is that I will have to close the shelter and and release the dogs again into streets, I'm afraid many would not survive.
We simply do not have the funds for the shelter to function normally and that is why we need this campaign to succeed, to be safe for food for at least some time. We can't do it alone, we need people's help! "
"Koki appeared out of nowhere in front of my apartment block, left there with newborn puppies. Two of the four puppies died right away, while the other two survived but only for a few days.
Koki is a wonderful and friendly dog, we are keeping her at the shelter as she has limited eyesight, we hope we can fix that. She is undoubtedly still in shock as a result to what she's been through.
It is apparent that Koki grew up with people and got used to people. The owners threw her out on the street when she got babies. She would not survive with other dogs on the street, she is unable to fend for herself, and needs us to be able to take care of her and provide her with enough food."
"We are still dealing with the fallout from the pandemic. The number of donations has drastically decreased, as has the process of adopting dogs, and thus the shelter's expansion has been postponed. We still don't have stable funding for the shelter, from august until today, we have received 247 euros in donations, which cannot even cover fuel costs...
I mostly finance the shelter with personal funds, which I don't have much of and won't be able to give any real soon. We are lucky that veterinarians are acutely sensitive, and still receive our emergency cases despite our huge debts with them. On the whole, we owe thousands of euros.
We haven't been able to get support from the municipality, I don't see a way out of this situation right now. I honestly don't know, I'm not sure how I'll keep the shelter running. It would be much easier if people recognized our efforts and participation. It is important because our shelter is the only place where dogs can survive."
"We are the only registered association for the protection of animals in Srebrenica. There are several boarding houses for dogs, but the Silver Dog Association is the only one that works on a "no kill" system. The main motive was to help the dogs that were abandoned. I have seen them tortured and abused, and often killed. Nobody cared about them.
We have directly influenced the number of dogs on the streets to be reduced and to be treated more humanely. I am extremely glad that I have saved many dogs, particularly mothers with puppies. I am proud that the shelter exists despite many problems, and I know it is a safe place for dogs where they receive all the care and love they deserve.
My hope is that someone will recognize our efforts and desires for the survival of this shelter, and that it will aid us in our fight to protect abandoned dogs, provide them with a safe home, and give them the opportunity to be adopted by humans."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We write to individuals, contact them, and seek for assistance, but no one responds. Small financial donations are what we receive, we're getting less and less donations and collaborations. Recently, I've noticed that many shelters are struggling with funding and receiving less and less support.
We have daily posts on Facebook and Instagram, as well as a large number of views, but despite our best efforts, there are no concrete results from social networks. We attempted to start fundraising for each dog separately, but that also failed miserably...
We face many challenges every day, such as how to provide everything we need for today and how to survive day by day."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
