Animal Webaction visited the site 04 October 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"As I only have two bags of kibble left, I have been forced to reduce the portions given to the dogs: they only eat once a day, compared to twice a week ago...
In a few days, my stock will be totally empty, and I don't know how they will manage without me, they have no other solution to eat... On an empty stomach, street dogs are more aggressive, that's what happens when they are hungry, and they end up killing each other!
If I were to give up, the majority of them would simply starve to death. I am very worried!"
"After being thrown out by his owners, Zucko suffered greatly from the cold and hunger on the streets. These extreme living conditions did not spare him as he soon contracted an intestinal disease that could have cost him his life... I had no choice but to take him to the vet. Today, even if he is finally cured, he remains unfortunately very sickly...
As I have already started to reduce the portions of kibble given to the dogs on a daily basis, I am afraid of what will happen to him if I don't come and feed him every day anymore, he is not strong enough to survive alone in the street, especially with the winter coming... !"
"All the dogs in the shelter are extremely fragile, they could not live on the street. Unfortunately, there are many others who are in this situation but I have neither the space nor the financial means to take them all in... it breaks my heart.
For now, their health is stable because they continue to eat, but in the long run, it would have an impact. It's a heavy burden to carry, they are so fragile that the moment they stop eating, their lives will be in danger."
"Laika was abandoned by her owners. While I was trying to catch her, a truck hit her and broke her jaw. She was in a terrible state and I immediately took her to the vet.
Unfortunately, the vet here didn't do a good job, so I took her to another vet who improved the situation. I still have to take her to the scanner in Zajecar to see what exactly is going on with her jaw.
She is slowly recovering, but she will need a quality diet to fully recover."
"I have a lot of debt. Everything is expensive... Just look around this property; I have electricity, vet bills, stall maintenance, laundry for the blankets, and other things that are necessary for daily living.
Injured dogs eat special food and need treatment, which is also a major expense. I have to pay the water bills regularly because it is vital, but all other bills are on hold.
The city offers a small amount each year, but it's not enough, even for a month: I clearly need help getting kibble!"
"Sometimes I don't sleep at night. That's how overwhelming this feeling of helplessness is. I really hope this kibble campaign works out, because I have no other options right now. I am emotionally attached to the animals in my shelter. There was one time when I didn't have any food to give them...it almost wiped me out.
My son helped me at that time, and I was able to pull myself together and move on. If I didn't, I don't know what would happen to the animals or to me. When they're hungry, I'm hungry too. I feel their pain."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Serbia which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"I ask for help via Facebook when I have an emergency and the pet needs to be taken to the vet. I usually get some funds from people willing to help, but it's not enough to cover all the care ... Even if the vet helps me as much as possible, I have to pay the bills most of the time with my own savings.
I am also trying to negotiate with the local government about mass sterilizations of stray females, because the more they are in the streets, the more the dogs are starving: I can't feed them all at this rate! I am desperate..."
