Animal Webaction visited the site 09 October 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"I feel responsible for these dogs and I am under a lot of stress every day because of all the uncertainty that comes with not having enough kibble. I am really speechless at this point. I feel that the situation is getting worse every day for the street dogs. No matter how much we try to improve things, bring some dogs back to the shelter and sterilize others (we even offer free sterilizations to dogs who have owners), the situation is getting even more out of control. I really don't know what else to do.
There have been and still are countless dogs I would like to save, but I really can't have any more dogs in the shelter. I can't risk taking in more dogs and not being able to feed them all. Just thinking about it makes me feel devastated and the whole situation makes me feel helpless.
If the dogs don't eat kibble this winter, they can get sick, freeze in the cold and die. Or they may become aggressive because of the lack of food. We don't need this because they are already very discriminated against by the local population!"
"Micko lives on the street and was recently hit by a car and injured in the leg... He has been treated, but the consequences of the injury are still present. I can't take him to the shelter as I'm not sure I can give him enough food.
He needs to be fed regularly and with better quality kibble so that his wounds heal faster! With winter coming, he might become aggressive with humans and other dogs if he starts to get hungry... I am very scared for him!"
"The dogs in the shelter are our responsibility, as we have voluntarily taken them in and therefore we have to take care of them by all means. They have got used to being fed every day and it has to stay that way. We have to fight to find them food somewhere and keep them happy and healthy.
Unfortunately, I am very afraid of winter and all the changes it will bring. We will have more dogs in the shelter so we will need more food as the dogs use their energy to keep warm. If we happen to give a dog up for adoption, a new dog will simply take the place of the previous one. It's a never-ending circle that keeps expanding..."
"I found Neo when he was still a puppy, he had an open fracture of his thigh bone... He had surgery, but as he had been in that condition for quite some time, the case was complicated and the operation was not entirely successful.
Apart from the fact that he cannot use his back leg, he feels better at the shelter than on the street. As he is still healing and has not yet fully recovered, Neo needs special care and regular meals containing all the necessary nutrients!"
"We know that these dogs depend on us, whether they are in the shelter or on the street. I feel bad when I know a dog is waiting for you to give them food and you don't have any... Dogs on the street tend to get used to receiving food from us and then they stop looking elsewhere. When we don't have anything to give them, they wait for us for a couple of days first and only then do they look for food on their own.
I don't know how we will manage if this harvest fails. We are already heavily in debt to several pet shops and vets. The idea that this harvest could fail really scares me. If it fails, I'm pretty sure we won't be able to feed the street dogs regularly over the winter, we just won't have the resources. We may not even be able to feed them at all."
"I love all animals in general but when it comes to the dogs I care about, I must say they have a special place in my heart. I'm afraid we don't have enough resources to feed the dogs in the shelter and we can't treat the sick dogs who need their medicine daily. As for the street dogs, I am afraid they will end up in a worse state than they are already in. I don't want to see them struggling to survive!
The biggest sacrifice is of course my social life. I have to work every day and then immediately afterwards I go to the shelter and spend countless hours looking after the dogs. This leaves me little or no time to socialise and take time for myself."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Serbia, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Apart from the 7 bags of kibble recently donated, we have not received any other donations... I think the pandemic is still going strong. At the moment, in Serbia, the cases of infection are reaching a new peak. It's just not easy to cope.
The whole world is in crisis because of the pandemic. People all around the globe, not just here in Serbia, have less means to provide and help us. The people who still have resources and are willing to help will mostly just help the people in their own country and not someone from abroad.
All the organisations I am in contact with only help us by offering free sterilisation of dogs, whether they are strays or dogs that have their owners. They simply see this as the best solution to contain the number of stray dogs and they are right about that. Apart from that, they don't propose anything else. But I am extremely grateful for any help and support. It means a lot to me and to the dogs."
