Animal Webaction visited the site 02 November 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"I take care of about a hundred dogs spread over different districts of Essaouira. Unfortunately, I've been desperately short of kibble for a few weeks and I can't feed them as frequently as I used to. They went from a daily feeding to a biweekly feeding... It's catastrophic.
I do what I can by giving them dry bread and chicken scraps but it's not enough, the dogs are hungry...They fight at the slightest sign of food. The situation is getting worse every day and I don't know how to get out of it: I have lost my job and my income, and many people who used to support me with donations can no longer do so. The success of this campaign is imperative... The dogs' survival depends on it!"
"When dogs are hungry, they venture further than usual to find food, they look in garbage bins, go near people's homes... When this happens, residents are very quick to call the pound to get rid of the problem.
In the last few weeks, 20 street dogs have been taken away by the pound and euthanised... In spite of our attempts, we unfortunately could not do anything to save them. The municipality turns a deaf ear and cares little about their fate anyway.
Slaughter is my worst nightmare... I take care of street dogs to avoid it, but today I feel helpless and overwhelmed. If we don't find a quick solution to feed them, other dogs could be killed at any moment... The thought is unbearable!"
"Mamia is around one year old, she has advanced scabies, she is very sick. To make matters worse, she is also pregnant and may give birth at any moment. She lives in a pack of dogs, but of very timid nature, she does not manage to impose herself in front of the other females, she is always the last one to eat... She is also regularly chased by the population because of her disease.
I am really afraid for her but unfortunately I am bound hand and foot, I have no structure adapted for her and I cruelly lack resources to take care of her. It is imperative that I can at least feed her! If I can't do that, she will suffer greatly and I don't know if she will have the strength to handle the impending delivery and nursing..."
"I have lost a lot of support since the beginning of the pandemic because of people who have unfortunately passed, but also because nobody earns a living like before, people can't help me anymore. Even the restaurants that used to give me their leftover food can't do that anymore because they don't have enough customers.
I too have been affected by this crisis that made me lose my job. Before, I would use my personal money for medicines, kibbles etc... But now it's no longer possible. I am trying to make a living by selling homemade baked goods, but this money is too little to help me feed more than 100 dogs...
I have debts to the supplier, I don't know how to get my head above water... I need this collection to continue helping the dogs!"
"I decided to help animals in 2016 after my own cat passed away and have been continuing this noble cause ever since. I take care of dogs and cats, in a small field that I set up and in the streets. My association does not receive any subsidy from the state, all actions are the result of the individual effort of 4 women volunteers including myself, it is a huge job.
The dogs to be cared for are always more numerous and the adoptions are at a standstill. The adoptions are exclusively done abroad and no flight accepts animals at the moment. We really need help to be able to continue our actions and give a chance at survival for the many dogs who rely on us".
