Animal Webaction visited the site 15 December 2021 and confirms the situation described below.
"We have already exceeded the maximum capacity of the shelter. There are not enough adoptions lately, we assume this is a consequence of the pandemic... We have some old mattresses and blankets to help them stay warm during the winter, but we are running out of kibble to feed them! If the dogs are hungry they will get cold and the blankets will not be enough...
We are currently facing big problems: more and more dogs in need, and a lot of debts to the vet and to the kibble supplier. It would be easier if we had a stable source of funding or regular kibble donations, but we don't. At the moment we have to cut the few kilos of kibble we have left with wet bread, and in a few days we will have nothing left.
It's a huge psychological pressure, the work at the shelter would be much easier, and we would have more strength and positivity working with the dogs every day if we didn't have to think about money or food. Our biggest fear is not being able to feed the dogs who are totally dependent on us to survive!"
"Ivana found Svrca on the street a few weeks ago. She noticed a white-eyed dog in the middle of the road, and literally stopped the traffic to catch him. As he has very poor eyesight, he would have been run over for sure!
He is undergoing treatment to reduce his cataract, but he will never regain his sight completely... He can still see some shadows but more than 80% of his vision is damaged. He needs to be properly fed to survive this winter, without kibble he will become weak and ill!"
"The number of street dogs is constantly increasing... Lately we find more and more dogs injured in accidents or by careless people. Stray dogs have a hard life, they need proper nutrition to stay healthy, especially during the harsh winter in Serbia.
The success of this kibble collection is vital for the street dogs! If it fails, their health will be compromised, resulting in increased veterinary costs. Furthermore, it threatens our survival as an association, and the dogs would then be left to fend for themselves...
For a fortnight now, our stock of kibble has been too low for us to give them normal portions of kibble. But in winter, especially when they live on the street, dogs need to eat more! We are very afraid for them..."
"Some friends are willing to help us, they see that we are reaching our own limits, and they help us as they can. Unfortunately, there are no new volunteers. So we have stopped relying on anyone... If we could afford it we would pay for a caretaker but it is just not possible at the moment as we have too many debts already.
Our kibble supplier was about to stop selling us food until we paid off some of our debts. It's hard... This uncertainty is constantly hanging over our heads. If we don't get a donation, it's only a matter of time before some pet shops cut us off until we pay our debts, and that would be terrible. I can't even think what would happen to all those dogs.
There is a lot of work at the shelter for only two people... The dogs that are undergoing treatment have to be taken to the vet every day, we have to feed all the dogs, take them out, we have to clean the boxes, and all this is a lot of time and energy! It wouldn't be a problem if we didn't have the pressure of debt and lack of kibble. Unfortunately, the debts are piling up, and it's getting harder and harder for us to manage..."
"Unfortunately, many people do not want to sterilise their pets, even though sterilisation is free. They don't realise that the increasing number of dogs on the streets is a huge problem for everyone. We have had a significant impact with sterilisation, which has stabilised the situation in the city, but some owners still think it is unnatural and let their dogs multiply uncontrollably.
Fortunately, there is also a positive side: adoptions are our greatest pride! We are happy when we save a dog's life, take care of it, and receive photos of it with its new family, happy and healthy. It's a simply fantastic feeling that keeps us going!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"Our income is therefore unstable because it depends on the goodwill of citizens. We regularly appeal for donations on our Facebook page for special cases, when animals are in need, injured, etc. Sometimes we cannot raise the funds in time to treat the animal in need, so we go into debt. Sometimes we can't raise the funds in time to treat the animal in need, so we get into debt.
The German organisation ETN has been our partner for years, and we have financed sterilisations with the funds they have given us. We hope with all our hearts that they will be able to help us again in 2022!
We have been interested in the programmes that some embassies offer to help organisations like ours. However, to apply for their funds, you need a special form of project, and they are time-limited, and we just don't have the time for that. We dedicate ourselves full time to this organisation, mainly in the field (8-9 hours a day). Sometimes even more. We would like to have more time for other things, like writing projects, but we just don't have it. We need volunteers, but if we don't offer a salary, no one will come and help us!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
