Animal Webaction visited the site 05 January 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I haven't had any kibble for a while and I can't afford to buy any more. My savings are already gone and donations are really scarce these days. All the dogs in my care are hungry because I have run out of kibble. I am currently feeding them with leftovers from my friends and some kibble that I buy with the help of my English friend.
I have been reducing the amount of food for over a month now and I can already see the consequences: the dogs have lost weight and seem weaker! If the dogs don't get the right amount of food, they have to look for it. They go to the local people, who prefer to call the dog catchers rather than feed them. They also go out into the street and risk being hit by cars...
I feel completely helpless. It's really stressful to know that all my efforts so far are meaningless if I can't continue to provide them with regular food. It's a difficult time. I am worried about the lives and welfare of the dogs in my care. I am running out of options to provide them with food..."
"I am the only person taking care of these dogs. I have no help from other people. I feed them every day, give them health care and regularly sterilise the new arrivals. The situation has never been worse... People are systematically abandoning dogs, regardless of their age, sex or breed. I have found dogs in tied bags thrown from cars, tied to trees, injured, beaten, and even drowned in the canal!
The number of abandoned dogs continues to grow, but I manage to find adopters for some of them. Unfortunately, others are dying. Since I have run out of kibble, the dogs have lost weight and become more aggressive towards each other, fighting over food almost every day.
If I don't get kibble in time, there will be tragic consequences for the dogs. They will be starving in the middle of winter, forced to wander in search of food. Some of the dogs are already sick and unable to care for themselves, so starvation will probably be the end of them. I don't think I have the emotional strength to face such a horrible image..."
"When I first noticed him in the area, Ernie was wearing an old, dirty collar. He was probably living in someone's garden, but had been abandoned due to his advanced age. Unfortunately, this is a common practice in the area. The collar was very tight and I found it difficult to remove. I had to gain Ernie's trust first.
One morning I found Ernie running around in circles and falling constantly. I rushed him to the vet and discovered he had suffered a stroke. I put him on medication and he had 5 injections a day for 10 days straight. I was so happy that he got better, even though he hasn't fully recovered and will need medication every day for the rest of his life.
Ernie is very friendly and energetic, but he has significant long-term damage. He cannot hold his head in a normal position and is sometimes very agitated. Ernie needs enough quality food every day to cope with the effects of his illness. He is not able to forage for food on his own and is certainly not adoptable. Without kibble, he is likely to starve to death..."
"The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the budget and habits of many people. People are aware of the situation, but prefer to close their eyes and deal with their own difficulties. The main source of income for me to buy kibble is my own salary, which is quite low these days.
Sometimes I get help from a friend in the UK, but she too has financial difficulties. Since the start of the pandemic, I have been getting less and less help. Your help is crucial to save these dogs!"
"I started taking care of these dogs 7 years ago because I couldn't passively watch what was happening in the area. There was so much hatred and abuse against these dogs. These dogs depend on me to survive. I get up 2 hours earlier every morning to bring them food and water before I go to work. Sometimes I am late because I cannot find the dogs to feed them in time and I have to go to the same place twice.
I don't think the situation will change any time soon. My only hope is to find help in time and stay healthy enough to continue what I have been doing for the past seven years. Honestly, I don't expect anything from the population or the local authorities. In fact, they are the ones creating the problem..."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Romania, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"I don't get help from any organisation in terms of food resources. The only help I get is for neutering the dogs. Once a year Animal Society vets organise campaigns, for which I am very grateful, as otherwise I wouldn't have the money to pay them!
As I don't own a shelter, I am just a simple person who looks after stray animals. Unfortunately, my attitude and willingness to help is not enough to convince people that I am only doing it for the good of the dogs, without any financial benefit to me.
There are not many rescue organisations in Romania. The ones that do exist are overwhelmed and unable to take in more animals. The number of constantly abandoned, injured and mistreated dogs is astonishing; when I asked for help, I did not receive any positive answer regarding kibble! Only you can help me..."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
