Animal Webaction visited the site 20 January 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The number of dogs on the streets has increased a lot lately because the municipalities where we feed the dogs have temporarily stopped slaughtering them, without sterilising them. As there are no tourists because of the closure of the borders, the restaurants are closed, so the dogs can't find food, they depend on us to eat.
The problem is that we are financially in a critical situation... Explosion of births, diseases, accidents, and lack of means to feed them, care for them, sterilise them. The pandemic has drastically reduced donations and has aggravated the problem of dog overpopulation: it's a never-ending circle that prevents us from saving more dogs!
I feel very weary, I am exhausted and I always feel like I am fighting alone. Today I only have a 3-day supply of kibble, I'm afraid that the street dogs will die if I don't bring them something to eat!"
"Sofia was abandoned when she was only one month old, like many females. She was lying on the side of the road when she was hit by a car. Her pelvis was fractured, she can still move but she still has to jump...
I make sure she stays in the souk and doesn't go back on the road so that nothing happens to her. Because of her disability, she cannot fight for her daily food, she needs her kibble intake from our tours to stay alive!"
"As I mostly take in disabled or sick dogs at the shelter, they need to eat more than so-called 'healthy' dogs. Unfortunately, I have to ration them regularly, as my financial situation requires it... These dogs suffered a lot when they were living on the streets. I took them in, cared for them and gave them all the love they needed.
If I am not able to feed them anymore, they might catch diseases, some of them might not survive with an empty stomach! I'm afraid I won't have the strength and the means to continue... Despite everything, I still have hope, I couldn't abandon them, especially after all they have been through. This campaign is our only hope!"
"Aviron is a dog that we have been feeding on the street for a long time. She managed to get by despite her wobbly gait caused by a serious accident in her youth. Recently, we found her again on the side of the road, hit by a car... She was very thin, weak, scabby and prostrate in a corner.
She has recovered well thanks to our care, but I prefer to keep her under surveillance at the shelter so that she doesn't have another accident that could kill her... It is important that she has a regular supply of good quality food. Only in a shelter with kibble can she have that, and without the success of this campaign I don't know what will happen to her..."
"All our difficulties are related to the pandemic: the borders of Morocco are closed until January 31, the economy is totally paralyzed, there is no more tourism, no restaurants, no donations... The problem of managing the dog population is taking a back seat to this global crisis, which I can understand, but in the meantime we are in the worst situation.
As donations are decreasing exponentially, I have exhausted my personal resources, and I have had to go into debt with the kibble suppliers! I can't see the end of the pandemic, the return to normal seems more and more unthinkable to me, while our shelter only functions with donations..."
"Since I arrived in Essaouira in 2005, I immediately became involved in the protection of street dogs. Morocco is a country where rabies is still present, and the local population lives with the fear of being bitten and contracting the disease. Moreover, in the rural world, a dog has to fight to find its food, which leads to fights...
Feeding stray dogs allows us to socialize them and create bonds with them, in addition to reassuring the population. Unfortunately, changes in mentality take time, and we must continue to fight against the mistreatment of these dogs which remains far too present.
When I see the look and the reaction of some people in the village towards stray animals, I am proud to have participated in this change!"
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles throughout the country.
"Before the pandemic, the donations we received and the leftover food offered by restaurants were enough to feed the dogs. Today, our calls for help remain unanswered, the campaigns do not work, and our savings are dry... No other NGO or association helps us get kibble, you are the only ones!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the collected products, the beneficiary receives nothing and the buyers get a refund.
If you know of a foundation or NGO that could help Valerie, please invite them to contact us so that we can put them in touch.
