Animal Webaction visited the site 31 January 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"More and more dogs on the street are being hit by cars or trains and cannot survive on their own, especially when it is so cold! We don't choose the dogs we rescue, we welcome them all to the shelter. The problem is that there are currently 400 dogs, whereas we have a capacity of 350...
No matter how many dogs we put up for adoption, there are always so many that arrive at the shelter, and we only have a few days' worth of kibble left. Feeding 400 dogs all year round is a constant stress and the main need of the shelter. Animal Webaction is the only organisation we have contacted that is willing to give us a chance, I sincerely hope that this harvest succeeds so that we can solve the food problem to prevent the dogs from starving to death!"
"The conditions at the shelter are difficult, not only because the shelter is overcrowded, but also because it is extremely cold in winter. We do our best to find kibble but most of the time we don't have enough, so the dogs don't get enough to eat. This shelter is their only chance to survive and know the love of a family, we can't leave them in the street, because they would only survive a few days...
Because the dogs live together in the boxes, there are unfortunately often fights at the time of the distribution of the croquettes, and the strongest eat the rations of the weakest... There have already been many fights and deaths due to the lack of kibble! There are also dogs that are very weakened by disease, and who, on an empty stomach, die from lack of food.
It would be a disaster for us and our dogs if this campaign did not succeed, as we desperately need kibble to keep our dogs safe. Without your help, the dogs will struggle more, become weaker, and have no chance of surviving the terrible conditions of the Romanian winter."
"When we found Nell a few weeks ago, she had just been abandoned in a terrible state! She is incredibly thin, I am very afraid for her because at the same time we found a dog in the same state of health as her, and it did not survive... She absolutely has to gain weight, it's a matter of life and death for her! It's even too early to put her up for adoption, as she wouldn't survive the journey in her condition."
"The association hires 4 employees to take care of the 400 dogs, because unfortunately we have no volunteers to help us. As we sterilise, care for and feed all the dogs, this represents a huge budget that we cannot manage on our own.
We do manage to get some donations from sponsorships: some people agree to pay for the health and food costs of the dog of their choice and follow their progress over the days. Adoptions also help us, and I am the link between the shelter and the association: I take photos of the dogs that are ready to be adopted, I take sick dogs to the vet and I work with scared dogs so that they regain confidence and can be adopted. The problem is that if we don't find kibble soon, all our efforts will be in vain!
We are desperately short of donations, sponsorships and adoption proposals: we are afraid for our dogs, because no matter how hard we fight to get them off the streets and find a loving family, we can't feed them on our own!"
"We are a passionate team and we give all our time to the animals. The association was created in 2014 and this passion has allowed us to save more than 3000 dogs since then! My greatest pride is to see that the association has achieved and continues to achieve so much for the dogs of Romania.
I have recently noticed an increase in the number of dogs on the streets despite the sterilisation campaigns we are constantly running. We are also using a new primo vaccine which is an incredible discovery for us because the number of surviving puppies is much higher.
Without what we are doing, the dogs would continue to be at risk on the streets, breed, be aggressive because of their lack of socialisation, they would have no safe place to go and there would be no hope for them to find a loving family, which every dog should have."
