Animal Webaction visited the site 25 February 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I feel like as time is passing, the consequences of the pandemic are becoming more visible. A lot more purebred dogs have been abandoned : from chow chow, maltese dogs, rottweilers, german shepherds... Pre-pandemic, I never used to see that. Now, every day someone calls me to rescue a dog they saw on the street and the local pound is also full.
The number of dogs in my shelter has increased as a result but our means haven't... We barely managed to collect 250 euros in the past months, with which we bought some low quality kibble and bread. We have been managing however we know by trying to save up food but the little we have left won’t last long.
The dogs don’t eat as much as they should, it's honestly a dreadful. These dogs are my kids, I do not want them to get sick or attack each other due to the lack of food... We need some help!"
"Benny is a 4-year-old male, he's been at the shelter for a couple of months. Rescuing him was harduous, he was so scared, he kept running away! He is so afraid, even now if I carry something with me, he gets scared and bolts away...
I don't know what happened to him but my guess is that someone kicked him out and he wandered around for a while before I found him, he has clearly been starved... Even a few weeks after our rescue, he still won't put on enough weight. Benny's survival is at stake... He is particularly at risk because of his starvation and needs quality kibble to compensate for his malnourishment."
"The dogs at our second shelter are the most endangered ones, dogs that were sick, abused, malnourished... I am feeling really sad and exhausted that after all we have done, we still continue to see the same things occur - innocent dogs on the streets being abused and poisoned...
We keep receiving more and more calls to take in sick dogs, it never seems to stop. With these dogs especially, if we don’t have enough kibble, we are back to square one of their battle... They will get diarrhea, decline in immunity, and their lives will be threatened.
I am worried, we really need your help! When we have food, we have everything : the dogs are safe and we can increase the rescues and the help we provide to street dogs as well. Having this campaign succeed will help us greatly in achieving these goals."
"Fate was found on the street, she was hit by a car and she was completely broken, she has been lying like that on the street for a few days before I found her.
She now uses a wheelchair to go around and she is very cuddly and friendly despite her condition. Still, due to her handicap, she's definitely more at risk than others and depends entirely on us to be fed! If we can no longer provide it, the consequences for her will be terrible."
"We fund the shelter the same way we did before the pandemic, by posting on Facebook and asking for donations and gifts of good people. Some people donate, but a lot of people have lost their jobs, so our donations on the whole have dropped noticeably.
Since we are a non-profit organisation, we are not funded by the state either and we can’t afford to pay for food from our own pockets for one hundred dogs... One single bag of quality food is very expensive here... We also deal with a lot of handicapped dogs who need equipment (wheelchairs etc) and medicine to keep them healthy.
There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a dog you thought would never walk again, start walking after multiple operations and exercises! But of course, all of this requires a lot of funding... We have a huge debt at the vet for medicine, vaccines against viruses, operations, sterilizations...Our financial situation is terrible, but our most pressing issue remains the food! We welcome all the support we can get to help us feed our dogs."
"I founded the association in 2013, after I found a hurt dog on the street. At this moment in time, I realized that these dogs who are ill and injured have no chance on the streets or local pounds, and they needed a safe place to be rescued and cared for.
That's when I decided to make this real, and named the association after the dog I first rescued, Spaske. Eventually this became more serious and a friend gave us their land for the shelter, which I am forever grateful for. I hope that over time, our actions have contributed to raise awareness on this issue, that we gave voice to the ones who can’t speak...
Still, I am fearing that if something happens to me or Jovica , maybe no one else would do this in our city, especially on this scale. I am just hoping that our health serves us so we can continue taking care of them for a long time."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"There are a few people in Serbia that are merciful to dogs, but the vast majority are ignorant or outright abuseful. It has a lot to do with our culture – or more precisely the lack of it. Humans have lost their love and respect towards each other in general, let alone towards other creatures, so everyone suffers...
We are lucky to be helped by 2 organizations abroad, they help us when we find a sick dog, they share our posts online and help us find financial help and adopters. It means a lot to us. Unfortunately we are not government-funded, and locally, we don’t have many people who support us. This campaign is our only option to provide food for our dogs because no one else provides this type of help."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
