Animal Webaction visited the site 14 March 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I currently have 115 cats in my shelter. Obviously, there are even more in the street but sadly I can't take them all here. As there is no system in place to monitor feline reproduction in Marrakech, or Morocco for that matter, the stray cat population is constantly increasing and they live in very difficult conditions. Rumor has it that Moroccans love cats and treat them better than dogs, but I can assure you that isn't true...
In the shelter, a lot of my cats are sick, underfed, and the situation is only getting worse. For the past month, I have had to cut back on their rations, but since cats have more sensitive stomachs than dogs, I have to do my best to keep feeding them regularly. Today, I only have 30 kilos of kibble left, enough to last 3 days at most. I don't even dare to imagine what will happen if I have nothing left to give them... I need this campaign to succeed!"
"My biggest problem at the moment is the lack of kibble. Since my cats don't get enough to eat, they get weaker. Every day, more and more are becoming sick. Some have diarrhea, some have dental pain, and some have skin problems because of inapropriate food. Either way, they are all losing weight...I am afraid some may not survive.
I also cannot feed the distressed street cats or take in more in the shelter. Why rescue them if I can't fill their food bowls? I feel helpless and angry... Without your help, my cats are in real danger of starving. Having this campaign succeed is simply vital for them."
"Youga is a very sociable little cat, rescued from the street when she was only a few months old; she was most likely abandoned there. When she came to the shelter, she had Coryza in both eyes. I managed to save one of them, but she lost the use of the other one...
Right now, Youga is very sick. In addition to being abnormally thin, she has a lot of pain in her gums, and also intestinal problems. To get through this, she absolutely needs kibble every day, and in sufficient quantity."
"I try to manage with the few donations I receive from time to time, but I have debts everywhere: kibble suppliers, vet, water fees, rent charge... There is no money left in the association's cash drawer. I have no sponsors, no partnerships. To make matters worse, the number of mouths to feed only keeps on increasing; the local population is hit hard by Covid and our adoptions are at a standstill.
This pandemic has changed many things for me. Before 2020, with the jobs I was doing and the events I frequently organized, donations were keeping me afloat. Nowadays I can hardly work anymore, and the on-and-off closing of borders has also done a lot of damage. Many foreign volunteers who were very involved alongside us have had to leave the country. They were invaluable, because now I find myself with a huge workload, and less time to devote to caring for my animals."
"I've spent my life helping animals, and I don't intend to stop there. I want to continue saving them, to make Moroccan citizens aware of the plight of animals at my level. It really hurts me to see that no one here has any feelings for these poor animals and worse, that they even try to hurt them sometimes.
Even though I have very little support, I know that every tiny action counts for these cats. In a way, it's from this idea that I founded my organization in 2017, which initially was just a boarding kennel. I believe that we are all under obligation to take care of animals and nature, as much as we do for humans. The problem is that I am exhausted on my own. I'm no Super Woman..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Morocco which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Solutions before the pandemic were rare, but now they are almost non-existent. My cries for help stay unheard, I feel isolated. I have the feeling that everyone is focused on their own problems.
In addition, collecting donations in Morocco is not easy because Moroccan banks are incompatible with the fundraising system. This reduces our possibilities to find funding, and pushes us to ask for help abroad.
I am very worried, this campaign is my last hope. It must reach its goal, there is no other alternative... It is crucial, because without this kibble, many of my cats will not survive."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
