Animal Webaction visited the site 02 April 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"With Covid, our donations dropped by 30%, which is a huge amount. But when the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, we lost almost the same percentage of donations, which makes it almost nothing right now...
Due to the current lack of funds, we had to stop sterilizing for now, by obligation and not by choice. Sterilization is the cornerstone of our project "Hayat", it's the most fundamental part of our actions. But It was either this or stopping feeding the strays altogether... I guess we chose the lesser of 2 evils. Still, the problem is that our remaining food stock is running out alarmingly fast and as it stands, we cannot say that the dogs are eating enough.
We only ask for food whenever we really need it and now is definitely one of those times. As we counted lately, there are over 1240 street dogs counting on our help in the streets of Tangier. The living conditions of each and every single of them is only good as long as we can continue providing for them. If we can no longer feed them, terrible consequences will ensue."
"Chico is a 4-year-old male. I actually found him as a very small puppy with his sister on the road. I picked them both up and took them to the vet. They were treated, vaccinated, sterilized, and we later took them back to their favorite place, where they still live today.
During Covid, the area around the University where he lives was completely deserted, there wasn't anyone to care and feed the dogs there. Without us to bring them food, I honestly don't know what would have happened to them... And the same thing applies today. Chico is fine now, but what will happen to him if I can no longer feed him? He always expects my car and always follows me around to receive his daily meal..."
"There are around 465 dogs under our care right now. All the dogs that are with us, whether it be at the sanctuary or the SFT house, are the most endangered and vulnerable ones, those who couldn't survive on the streets.
Unfortunately, providing them food and taking care of their health issues has become increasingly difficult because of the current decrease in donations. Now we feel that the risk is even higher than usual because we have many high debts crushing us, especially at the vet...
We are nearing the end of our food stock too and I don't know how we will be able to buy more. I'm afraid we'll face a food shortage very soon... Protecting and taking care of dogs is my main mission, goal, and concern in life. So naturally, you can only imagine how putting my dogs' lives at risk makes me feel...I will only be relieved once this food problem is solved and I know my dogs are all safe."
"Seamoon is a 2-year-old female, she has been with us for around 10 days now. Her owner threw her out hoping she would die, and she almost did... She had her puppies and was run over by a car. The accident left her paralyzed, with a broken back...
I have no doubt that if we didn't rescue her when we found her some 2 weeks ago, she would have been dead by now... Our duty towards her now is to continue taking care of her and treating her injuries. Seammon is very vulnerable, she needs extra TLC, a lot of food and special treatment. If we fail to provide those things, she will never be better..."
"Caring for so many animals, our vet bills are always huge and paying our debts to the vet every month is always a big concern. But it is especially difficult now, because no matter how hard we try to raise funds to cover them, our debts are simply higher than the money we get in... Being in this situation is pretty scary.
Covering our vet bills isn't the only inconvenience we face, our food costs are enormous too... And we know that the vast majority of our dogs will stay with us for the rest of their lives. Our costs are going to get lower anytime soon...
Knowing that my dogs are healthy and well fed is the only thing that relieves my stress and makes me feel good on a daily basis. We urgently need to solve our food problem... Animal Webaction has been our savior many times in the past and I really hope we can benefit from your help again this time."
"When I started back in 2013, the sanctuary was like a magical solution in my mind. But after some time we discovered that we are not gonna solve anything with the sanctuary only... So our solution today and for the future is the Hayat project. Hayat means "life" in Arabic. It consists in the TNVT method – Treat, Neuter, Vaccinate & Tag. We know it's the only solution!
Over the years, our actions and involvement have allowed us to spread the care culture into the community in this city. We can now see a clear difference in people's mindsets and everyone recognizes how positive our actions are.
Our hope is for a future where there are no strays on the streets of Tangier; and then all Moroccan cities and regions after that! We are fighting for one goal and nothing will make us stop. But what we really need currently, is being able to solve our food problem and start solving other financial problems, to be able to rescue and sterilize more dogs."
Animal Webaction has a logistics center in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"Social media has been our magical element to show to the population all that we have been through and reveal the sad truth of animals’ living conditions in our city. We know that fundraising is our only way to survive. But the situation with Covid and more recently the war, is greatly hindering our fundraising efforts. We urgently need donations to cover our veterinary debts, and kibble to keep our dogs healthy!"
