Animal Webaction visited the site 09 April 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"Unfortunately, all the changes that have happened lately have been negative... Our adoption rate has hit an all-time low, which means our food needs aren't going down either, and with everything that's going on in the world, pet food has increased by 30%. The price for one single bag of kibble has never been this high...
We hardly receive any financial donations anymore and no in-kind donations at all. Even bread has become incredibly expensive because of the increase in the price of flour, so the few good people who used to help us in this way can't do it anymore either. People can barely feed themselves, so helping us feed our dogs is understandibly not their priority...
Quite honestly, we have never experienced a crisis as serious as the one we are currently experiencing. In spite of all the efforts of our team of 3 volunteers, we can't face these new expenses. I feel terrible, helpless, sad... It's a feeling I do not wish on anyone else...".
"Many of the dogs that are at the pound have been rescued from a past of trauma and abuse. Some are sick and need recovering, some are extremely afraid and submissive, others are very defensive and will dominate the others.
The one and only thing that allows dogs to live in harmony is food! If there is nothing to eat, they will become aggressive, the stronger ones will kill the weaker ones, and the other dogs will die of vitamin deficiency, organ failure and other diseases... I can't imagine such a situation.
Getting kibble is a matter of survival for our dogs. It is also the only way for us to build mutual trust with the most traumatized ones. Each of our dogs is special in their own way, each has issues and traumas to overcome. Even if we give them love, all our efforts are wasted if they have an empty stomach..."
"Leni is a young male, he's been at the pound for around 3 months. We found him in front of a primary school, we do not know how he got there or what happened to him exactly but his hind leg was broken.
He is submissive with the other dogs and if there is a kibble shortage, he will be one of the first to pay the price because he is not able to defend himself against the more dominant dogs. It is essential that we have enough kibble at the shelter to avoid such a situation!"
"We often organize fundraisers on our Facebook page, asking everyone to donate a tiny bit, even if it's just one euro; but since the war in Ukraine, there are hardly any donations at all and when there are, they are very low. Unfortunately, less money and more expensive prices means in the end, much less kibble for the dogs...
We also lack medications for sick dogs. The tick and flea season has begun and we don't have the means to buy treatments, so dogs often get hurt when they scratch... It may seem like a small issue but wounds can get infected and then can lead to bigger health issues.
However, kibble supply remains our biggest problem today and our attempts to get help have not been successful. We have contacted the large food production companies in our area, asking them to donate their leftovers. Few agreed, and even those that did have now stopped giving us anything. We have no one left to ask, everyone has turned their back on us... We can only count on your help!"
"I have always loved animals, which is one of the reasons I became involved in this cause. But the real trigger was witnessing the cruelty and inaction of the people in my area when it comes to animal suffering. Here, dog killings are organized by the local hunters, and everyone thinks it's normal...
Since nobody was doing anything, I decided that that person would be me! It became my vocation. I have been involved at the local pound for years and with the help of two other volunteers, Nejira and Dalila, we have saved many dogs from certain death and helped them find loving homes. This is without a doubt our greatest achievement!
However, I can't help but think that if our actions were more "known", we might have more donations and our work would be easier. In spite of all our efforts, few people know about us and the government does nothing to publicize our work either, that is the sad reality...".
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"We are always looking for new ways to get kibble for the dogs and we regularly make donation appeals on our Facebook page. We sometimes get help from a German organization for kibble and adoptions, but unfortunately this help has become much more scarce lately.
At this point we really have no one to turn to and we can't buy kibble ourselves because of inflation. Like many people around the world, our financial situation is uncertain and I'm afraid it's going to stay that way. If we had a choice, we would stop pestering people to help us, but we can't! Please consider helping us!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The organizer doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
