"Our association has been feeding free cats in need for 24 years. However, we have never been so worried about the future: we have less than a week's supply left to feed 400 street cats spread over 80 different sites...
For the moment, the volunteers are buying the kibble to feed the cats. But most of us have little incomes, so we can only buy cheap kibble in supermarkets; and we still have to ration it because we aren't able to buy enough quantities to feed the cats every single day. Some cats have lost weight, others are starting to get sick... we have to act and fast!"
"Oslo is a 10-year-old cat who suffered a broken hip. Unfortunately, the injury did not heal properly and he is now disabled for life. He can't run or jump because he has a limp in his left hind leg. He also has a lot of trouble moving around, which is quite a handicap in the streets!
Looking for food is twice as difficult for him compared to the other free cats. He eats what he finds, but often vomits because it is not edible... We are his only means of support. Without the kibble we bring him, he won't survive!"
"With the Covid crisis, many individuals have found themselves in great financial difficulty and can no longer afford to keep their pets. Some ask us to intervene, and take care of their cats by threatening to kill them or abandon them if we don't take care of them...
There are also subdivisions where inhabitants refuse to have the free cats sterilized, without anyone really knowing the reason why. In spite of the support we receive from the municipality, cats proliferate year after year in these neighborhoods. It's a real vicious circle, because there are always more mouths to feed!
"Free cats are mostly older, and tend to be more fragile. With the seasonal changes, humidity and low-quality food, about a third of the cats are sick.
Veterinary expenses are clearly increasing: the municipality grants cover only one quarter of the 10 000 euros of annual veterinary bills... it is far from being enough! As for donations, they have clearly decreased since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. People are compassionate, but the fate of street animals is not their priority.
We can no longer afford to continue to nurse the cats and can only provide emergency care. But these are likely to increase, if the health of the cats continues to deteriorate... "
"For 15 years, I have been committed to animal welfare. In total, I dedicate several hours a day to this cause. Feeding all the cats in need represents a big financial burden for me personally. Every week, I spend the equivalent of a shopping cart on cats..."
