Animal Webaction visited the site 02 May 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
“The current situation with stray dogs is extremely difficult : it is not living, it's a daily fight for life! I take care of 20 to 50 street dogs around here and I always find more and more dogs on the streets of Veles to take care of… Unfortunately, right now I can't feed them daily because I don't have enough food left. In fact, I just gave them the last bag of kibble I had today...I honestly don't know how I'm going to manage providing for them in the near future.
Donations have dropped considerably in recent times and my own income is not enough to fill the gap. I am really worried because I know that if I don't find a solution soon, the street dogs will be in great danger! They will wander further than usual, eat garbage and get sick. Hunger will make them aggressive towards each other and people...
I'm running out of energy but I can't let them down, these dogs only have me. Most people here don't care about them, they don't take the time to give them food or attention. Some people even try to eliminate them, kick them, try to poison them or run them over with their car... I am exhausted and desperately need kibble. The dogs are waiting for me to feed them, they recognize me, they know I am there to help them. I can't forsake them..."
“I found Sweet by a garbage can along with his siblings a couple of days ago, they have been abandoned here. They are all very weak and underfed, they also have scabies and demodex... I know that for them, time is of the essence... But at the moment I'm completely powerless, I have no food to give them anymore, no funds to buy more or take them to the vet. I am scared that they might not survive, that they might starve or get hit by a car... I desperately need kibble to be able to save them!"
“There have been no adoptions recently, I have more dogs in the shelters, more expenses, and even the few donations I still receive are not enough anymore to feed everyone. I'm very nervous as I've been reducing kibble portions for a month already, the dogs just get enough to survive... Some of them have started having gastrointestinal problems and I am afraid that their health will continue deteriorating.
I'm doing my best but I'm going through a very difficult time and if it goes on like this, my dogs will start attacking each other or killing each other out of hunger... At this point, I'm really afraid I'm going to have to close the shelter and release the dogs to the street if things get any worse...
I am terribly frustrated, the dogs in my shelters are my responsibility; I can't betray them and I can't let them starve! I need this campaign to succeed so I can feed them and avoid the worst."
"Margo is 2 years old, I found her last week on the street, barely alive.... She is suffering from an infectious disease caused by a tick bite, her skin is very smelly and seems to be very painful... She is weak, skinny and also very fearful. I am sure she was abused and tortured by her former owners.
The vet kept her in the clinic for a few days but she still has a long way to go, she will need a lot of time and kibble to recover. She is in a terrible physical and mental state, it's heartbreaking to see her like this. I only hope I can find kibble to one day see her happy and healthy..."
“I lack everything : resources, homes for dogs, kibble... I have a job, and even if I use spend my income to provide for the dogs, it is unfortunately not enough. On a local level, I don't have any support; people here ignore my actions as much as they ignore the dogs they see on the streets...
Internationally speaking, since the war in Ukraine began more than two months ago, I get less help, donations have dropped and dogs are getting less and less adopted from Macedonia. It's very difficult to manage the shelter and the rescues in these conditions. I am indebted to the food supplier, the vet... I’m neither a millionaire, nor a superhuman… I hope that people will sympathize with my plea and decide to help because the city is full of abandoned and starving dogs who need my help..."
“I've been taking care of abandoned animals since I was 14! At the time I used to bring street dogs to my home but my family did not approve, so I decided to move to be able to continue saving as many pets as possible. Fast forward 10 years later and I'm still dedicated to this cause!
I'm proud to say that I managed to find families for more than 300 dogs in the past years. Whenever I feel blue, I think about this accomplishment and every dog that was saved : it cheers me up and inspires me a lot… Maybe it doesn't make much of a change on the spot, but it's a huge difference for every street dog I've saved from death!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Macedonia, still active despite the pandemic, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
“I conduct fundraisings, I post about my shelter on my Facebook page non-stop trying to get help… I depend on luck mostly. Before, I used to have enough donations and it helped me a lot, but that’s not the case anymore. Sometimes I hear some kind words from a passer-by, that I'm actually doing a good thing, but even this doesn't happen very often, and anyway it is not enough to help me concretely.
There are three organizations that help me with adoptions, but even though they are doing all they can, adoptions have dropped massively...I tried to contact a few other organizations that could help me with adoptions or donations, but I have not yet received any response. I desperately need this campaign to succeed so I can continue my actions for dogs!"
