Animal Webaction visited the site 07 May 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our donations have dropped drastically in the last few months. I thought that the situation would recover at some point after the pandemic, but with the war, no one offers to donate anymore. I mean, from time to time it happens that people come to donate a bag or two, but we have hundreds of dogs... it's simply not enough!
We have recently rescued an enormous number of puppies, dogs with health problems, dogs hit by cars... Abandonments are also on the rise. A lot of people have come to our shelter lately to surrender their own animals, even purebred dogs. People keep bringing us dogs but nobody helps in any way...
We have many many more mouths to feed, pet food prices have increased a lot and we are failing to raise funds. We simply cannot cope! We have almost no kibble left, I basically started to halve the dogs' portions a few weeks back... I've run out of options, the only hope is Animal Webaction because at this moment, it is the only organization that can help us provide sufficient amounts of kibble for our dogs... It is the only way.”
"Right now, dogs are eating poor quality kibble in very small quantities. If before they put it aside because they didn't like it at all, now they eat it out of necessity, because they are hungry... Many dogs have lost weight and they have also become aggressive, they have started fighting among themselves. The more dominant dogs eat the food of the submissive ones...
I'm afraid to find dead dogs in the morning because they fight with each other... and I'm afraid of the aftermath... How can I hope to make things right if I come to the shelter empty-handed? It is incredibly difficult. We can go on without many things, but if you don't have anything to feed the dogs, there is no salvation possible...
The lack of food changes the dogs' health and behavior, which in turn makes their adoption much more difficult... It's a vicious circle. If things continue like this, I don't know how long we will be able to hold on. Failing to provide for my dogs would be my greatest failure."
"Michaela is a 4-year-old female, she's been at the shelter since April. We rescued her after seeing a post on a Facebook page. When we found her, she was in a serious state of malnutrition and her whole body was eaten away by parasites (Demodex). She was chiped so she probably had an owner, but it's clear that she was abandoned a long time ago...
Her health is slowly improving and she is learning to trust humans again, but her recovery depends solely on her diet at this point. She's going to need a lot of kibble to make a full recovery and finally get healthy again..."
"Shelters all over Romania are badly affected by the war and we are no exception, the last month has been very bad. Most of the donations we used to receive from abroad have stopped because everyone is redirecting their help to Ukraine. We have also brought some dogs from Ukraine to our shelter but unfortunately we didn't receive any help.
It has been 2 months since the organization we work with is no longer able to send us donations, and even though they are still helping us with adoptions, these have also dropped dramatically. I believe that even people living abroad can no longer afford the transportation costs and vaccines...
We have several thousands of euros in debts to the veterinary practice for unpaid treatments and operations and we can't pay them back. No one is donating anymore, whether it is for veterinary care, food, etc... You are the only organization that has helped us in the last few months and I really hope that you can help us again. We can't do it without your help. "
"We are the only authorized shelter in Bacău, other than the pound where poor dogs die. We've saved hundreds of animals over time but even after so many years of involvement, I can't say I've noticed any major changes around here... There are just as many dogs on the street, it's exactly the same.
There's a clear lack of interest and involvement regarding animal welfare issues in our country; I think we have a mentality problem. The main problems are the continuous abandonments and the fact that people do not sterilize their animals, but also the cruelty. I've recently rescued a dog with his front legs cut off as a result of a bet... This type of behavior is simply evil.
We need to educate children to love and protect animals because without that, we will never see a real societal change. At our level, we do our best to make things happen by organizing sterilizations and getting as many dogs adopted as possible, but we always hit a wall when we say we have an animal shelter: "You should feed a child instead!" There is no change and no interest towards the animal cause. It's disappointing..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
“We have lost many donors in the last few years, first with the pandemic, and now with the war in Ukraine. People who used to donate no longer do it, and even the companies that used to donate small sums for sterilizations no longer give us anything. We have no help… Our donations have basically come to an end.
Even our adoptions abroad have fallen dramatically. A lot of organizations are trying to get animals out of Ukraine and so adoptions on Romania are no longer being made. We have extraordinary dogs waiting for loving families but this is the current situation…
Saving animals is not just about one person. I mean, one person can save a cat or a dog, but true salvation comes from those who donate. This is the main thing. Those who donate food, money, who help with transport fees, who adopt...I won’t be able to succeed alone, please help us!"
