Animal Webaction visited the site 30 June 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our association is entirely dependent on donations but lately, we have lost many sponsors who said they were redirecting their money to support Ukraine refugees. To make matters worse, all our adoptions to the UK have been blocked for the last 3 months due to the new restrictions put in place for Romanian dogs... We have dogs who are ready to travel, but are forced to wait to be delivered to their new families.
All of this has a negative effect on our morale and most importantly, it impacts our resources greatly. More dogs means more food to provide, more bills to pay, more of everything... There's also been a dramatic price increase on kibble, which makes providing food for our dogs increasingly difficult for us...
We're going through our very last bags of kibble; it will last a couple of more days maximum. It's extremely stressful and worrying to not have any certainty about tomorrow’s situation... I’m really afraid that I might not be able to ensure kibble for my dogs in the near future. This campaign must succeed!"
"The number of dogs on the streets has increased dramatically lately. Unfortunately, there are many people who still don’t understand why it’s important to sterilize their dogs so when they end up with a lot of puppies, they're taking the easy way out and simply abandon them...
Street dogs in Romania have a very hard life, if it weren’t for the associations like my own, they would be sentenced to death. That’s the reason I have been fighting for them for the last 6 years and the reason I now have so many animals under my care. But due to our current lack of resources, my rescue efforts are greatly hindered... I can't take on more dogs if I don't have enough to feed them!
If we don't manage to gather some kibble, street dogs and dogs in the local pounds will suffer a great deal, and we will too, knowing that we won't be able to do anything to help them out... Our actions are a matter of life and death for these dogs, we are their only chance but we need help to be able to help them in return!"
"Oreo is a 3-year-old male, he was hit by a car on the streets of Hunedoara; a person who knew about our shelter alerted us about him. We took Oreo to the vet, the impact left him severely wounded and his hind legs could not be saved unfortunately.
Despite his ordeal, Oero has a very sweet nature, he is friendly to both humans and other dogs. But because of his handicap, he will never be able to survive on his own again. His survival can now only be assured if we can provide everything he needs and, more simply put, if we can feed him!"
"It’s getting harder and harder to buy kibble for the dogs. Our donations have dropped recentely and our adoptions are blocked... We have a larger number of dogs than usual to provide for and the price for kibble has become a lot more expensive. We're really struggling!
With 300 souls under our care, many having been rescued from dire situations and poor health; our veterinary bills are also through the roof... We've accumulated a few thousands euros of debt at the veterinary office because we're simply out of funds and cannot pay them.
If we manage to gather kibble with this campaign, besides ensuring that our dogs will have food secured for a month, it will also mean that we could pay off some long overdue veterinary debts... You can't imagine the relief that would be for us!"
"I am the president of the association "Sufletele nimanui" which literally translates into "nobody's souls". The association was created 6 years ago, after I stepped into a local pound for the first time. When I realized that all these dogs would be euthanized after a period of 14 days if no one claimed them, I just knew I had to do something! I started the shelter and from thereon, not a single dog has been euthanized in this place because I do my best to take them all.
Together with my friend and member of the association Annie, we’re working daily at the shelter for the dogs. We are at the shelter from 7am until 4pm everyday, cleaning, feeding, treating, bringing the dogs to the vet, searching for partners, fundraising... Unfortunately on a local level, we don’t receive any help, some people congratulate us for all that we do while others consider us crazy for even trying...
The authorities do not stop people from abandoning their dogs or even prosecute them either. Sometimes it really feels like we're alone in this, and in many ways, we are! I remain hopeful that things will improve in the future, but in the meantime, I can only continue to do my best by rescuing one dog at a time and working to find them a family..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"I post daily about our needs on our Facebook page, sometimes people help but most of the time they do not... Thankfully we have the support of a few foreign organisations, they help us with sponsors, adoptions, sometimes food. Their support is invaluable but of course we're not the only ones they help and their resources are limited too.
I tried reaching out to other organizations and all of them are already helping somebody else and they say they can’t support more. It’s very hard to find new collaborations and with almost 300 dogs it’s impossible for me to support all the expenses on my own, that’s why I need all the help from everyone! At this stage, getting your help with kibble is our last resort after having tried everything else..."
