Animal Webaction visited the site 03 July 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"Donations have hit an all-time low, it’s now more difficult than ever to provide for the dogs. I make significant efforts to ensure all the dogs get fed but I can’t say that they get enough food at the moment unfortunately. I've had to start cutting down on their portions a few weeks ago when the food from the last campaign ran out... We’ve only got 30 kilos of kibble left, which is not even enough for today and the quality we give them is also very low because that’s all we can buy.
I feel sad, worried, and disappointed. These dogs are my everything, I put in a lot of work for them and there’s literally nothing else going on in my life except for this shelter. I really hope I can ensure they have food with this campaign, I don't want to imagine what would happen if it didn't. I'd be devastated..."
"With the extreme heat we’re facing these months, everything is getting more complicated; physical labor for us is becoming more difficult and the dogs are getting weaker, they're exhausted... We provide them with fresh water every day but what they ultimately need to be able to withstand this heat is good food!
If we don't find a solution soon to find quality food and increase their portions, I'm really worried that some of the more vulnerable dogs might not make it. Many of them have arrived here recently in very bad health, so the lack of good food combined with the unbearable heat could honestly kill them...
We've made a big difference in these dogs' lives by taking them off the streets and giving them a second chance, we're doing the best we can, but somehow it feels like it's not enough. We desperately need more food, that’s the most important thing right now and there’s just no other way for me to gather this help other than through this campaign..."
"Iris is a 1-year-old female, she was found in a field and brought to the shelter, my guess is that she was abandoned by her owners, like so many others. I know it's hard to imagine, but she was even skinnier when we found her... She is getting better now but she is definitely still struggling and the cheap kibble we have doesn’t seem to do much for her, it’s obvious that she is weak and doesn’t have any energy. Iris is definitely among the most endangered dogs at the shelter and if we don't find kibble to give her soon, it could kill her..."
"Our association depends entirely on donations, but these have dropped considerably in recent weeks. Adoptions have also decreased, people are adopting more animals in Ukraine and we are suffering from this. This war is terrible for everyone!
The supply of kibble is getting more and more difficult and with 570 dogs at the shelter, the quantities to be supplied each day are enormous. I have no choice but to take out loans to be able to feed the dogs in the shelter and it is still not enough... We also have several thousands of euros in debts to the veterinary office for treatments, sterilizations, surgeries... and we can't pay them back.
Everything I do, I do for these dogs, but it is incredibly difficult and tiring. There are just too many dogs and we lack the manpower and funds to care for them properly. We need the help of others, whether it's volunteering or donating to the shelter. Any help is welcome!"
"I have loved animals with all my heart my entire life. I've always wanted to do something to help them and care for them, that's why I founded this NGO in 2016. I was lucky enough to get all this land from the mayor’s office and I started the shelter you see here today. I am happy with the number of dogs we’ve cared for all these years and the dogs that we’ve gotten adopted but I always feel like there’s so much more to be done!
That’s why I’m struggling and it’s why I’ve literally dedicated my life to these animals, because I know there’s more to be done for them and they need me, they need us! If the dogs didn’t end up in our care, they would likely die of starvation, disease, or even simply get hit by cars on the roads. We can’t offer the best care, but it’s definitely better for them than if they didn’t have the shelter at all... I just wish more people would volunteer to help us because it's impossible to succeed in taking care of so many animals on our own."

"Donations have gone down lately, particularly since the war in Ukraine. People are donating less to dog shelters and more to the people of Ukraine. The Smeura dog shelter (Tierhilfe Hoffnung Tierheim Smeura) sometimes takes some of our dogs and gets them adopted, but not very often and they don’t take many dogs, just a few.
We have reached out to many other organizations but they all said they weren't able to help us. It’s incredibly disappointing when no one can or wants to help...Feeding our dogs has become extremely difficult and I fear the situation will only continue to worsen...I really hope this campaign will succeed because our situation is so dire."
