Animal Webaction visited the site 10 July 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"Our private shelter used to be the municipal pound, now we have a contract with the town hall: to avoid euthanasia we accept all the dogs that the employees catch in the street. It is therefore very difficult for us to control the number of dogs we take in...
The number of dogs has definitely increased in the last few months as we have 500 dogs and the shelter can only take 300! In spite of the sterilisations we do, too many puppies are still abandoned, and mentalities are changing only very slowly...
The lack of kibble is a huge handicap for us, especially at the moment, as the summer holidays have begun: people have other priorities, and we will have to deal with the abandonments and the decrease in donations for 3 months! A few weeks ago, people were still worried about us, especially as we had saved many Ukrainian dogs because of the war. Today, we are alone, the enthusiasm has evaporated and we only have two days of kibble left... I'm stressed, worried, I have absolutely no control over the number of dogs that arrive at the shelter and I'm afraid I won't have anything left to feed them..."
"The shelter is overcrowded! The dogs are stressed, they don't sleep enough because there are too many of them in the boxes... It's been more than a month since we started rationing them, so the dogs are even more agitated and fight much more easily to eat more...
It's heartbreaking, really. If we go on like this, if no one helps us with kibble, the leaner and sicker dogs will not make it... They need to eat good quality kibble in sufficient quantity to survive in such conditions. I know each of them personally, I care about all of them, I don't want them to suffer and it breaks my heart to see what they are going through now..."
"Mylène was abandoned in the forest years ago. She has a very serious heart problem so we keep her in a special kennel with fewer dogs and no dominants so that she doesn't risk being attacked by other dogs. Her heart is so fragile that the treatment we give her will not work without a proper diet. She has already started to lose weight, I am very worried about her health, this kibble campaign is vital for her!"
"We only have French volunteers from time to time, one or two weeks, two or three times a year, which is not nearly enough... So we have four employees at the shelter at the moment, and of course we have to pay them every month... My role is to work with the dogs, especially the scared ones, to teach them to walk on a lead so that they are more easily adopted, and to give them the treatments they need to cure diseases, infections or disabilities...
We manage to do all this work thanks to adoptions and donations, especially from France, and we partner with certain companies to obtain funds. Unfortunately, donations are becoming increasingly rare... At the beginning of the war in Ukraine, people were giving more, but their interest has waned, and we are more than ever alone... It is becoming impossible to feed the dogs without help, which is why this kibble campaign is so important!"
"We are a passionate team and we give all our time to the animals. The association was created in 2014 and this passion has allowed us to save more than 3000 dogs since then! My greatest pride is to see that the association has achieved and continues to achieve so much for the dogs of Romania.
I have recently noticed an increase in the number of dogs on the streets despite the sterilisation campaigns we are constantly running. We are also using a new primo vaccine which is an incredible discovery for us because the number of surviving puppies is much higher.
Without what we are doing, the dogs would continue to be at risk on the streets, breed, be aggressive because of their lack of socialisation, they would have no safe place to go and there would be no hope for them to find a loving family, which every dog should have."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"We managed to get a partnership with a company that sells GPS collars for pets: by advertising to them we manage to get a percentage. The problem is that apart from this partnership, no other organisation or company is helping us to fund ourselves... Yet we spend all our time appealing for help! We have a few friendly shelters that give us kibble when we run out, and when we have some we give it back.
We sometimes fundraise online for small medical treatments, vaccines and kibble, but people don't donate as much as they used to, and our need for kibble is constant, especially since the shelter has reached its maximum capacity... We need outside help to feed them all!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
