Animal Webaction visited the site 21 July 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The war has brought a huge economic crisis : all prices went up high, dog food, medicine, vaccines… everything. Collecting money for kibble has become an absolute headache! People are currently worried on their own survival and do not have much interest in animals. I have less and less donations and adoptions have also slowed down...
This crisis is bringing so many problems to us. I understand and I can't blame anyone for the situation but with almost 80 dogs under my care, the amount of kibble I need to feed them is unfortunately not decreasing! It is not easy to fight the current situation at all, it is tough, very tough...
I am trying to stay positive but I'm honestly very scared of what the future will bring. The main thing the dogs need right now is food and the fact that I can't provide it to the extent of their needs is breaking my heart... These dogs are my life; their happiness is my happiness and all they need right now to be happy is to have a full stomach!"
"I started cutting down on kibble several weeks ago - until I can figure out a way to obtain more kibble, that's unfortunately my only option... It hurts me to say this but my dogs are currently underfed and it affects them a lot. They are getting more nervous and their health state being already very sensitive, I'm worried they could get even worse. It's extremely painful to even think about...
I rescued these dogs from the streets where danger is everywhere and by bringing them here, I saved their lives. They are safe in my shelter, but of course in order to remain safe, they need food! It's what keeps them alive and it's a virtuous circle; if my dogs are well-fed and healthy, then they can be ready to find a forever home and truly be happy. After all, I know I'm only here to act as an intermediary between their past and future, but I can't do it alone! I need help to be able to feed my 79 dogs on a daily basis while they're still under my care..."
"Bony is a 1-year-old male, I found him on the streets and brought him to the shelter around 6 months ago. If you could have seen his condition when I found him, you wouldn't have believed it.... He was very skinny, ill and malnourished. He was dehydrated, had a high temperature and wounds all over his face and body. It was very sad...
He is receiving treatment, he is doing better but he isn't 100% back on track, he still has demodex - a mite infestation on his skin. I am really scared that the lack of food would take his health back down... I honestly wouldn't forgive myself if something bad were to happen to him."
"The global crisis has changed everything for the worse. In the current context, even the most basic necessities such as oil, bread, flour, sugar, are very expensive. Then gas, electricity, and the list goes on... Honestly, I can barely provide for myself so having to provide for 80 dogs in the current circumstances is beyond difficult!
I have lost many donors and I fear I will lose more. I don't know how much longer we can get by without more help... I have debts for medication, vaccines and identifications... but for now, all that is secondary - the top priority is feeding my dogs! All I hope is to get some kibble to keep them alive..."
"I started rescuing dogs many years ago, when I was still living in Sarajevo. In 2018, I came to Jabuka with the mission to rescue dogs and that's when I decided to open my shelter. I give all my love and care to the dogs and make sure they have everything they need - not enough maybe - but they have a better life than they had before....
At the shelter, I manage everything by myself to provide for my 79 dogs, it is a lot of work. I would love to have volunteers help me with the day-to-day tasks; it would make me so happy to see people motivated to help these wonderful creatures! Unfortunately, even today, most people are completely unaware of the positive energy that dogs bring... I often get horrible messages telling me that I should be helping starving children and not dogs... but I'm used to it now, it doesn't discourage me.
The dogs are so happy and grateful for everything I give them, that's what makes me happy. Moments like their excitement when I approach them to pet them, feed them, talk to them and finally get them adopted, these are the things that help me overcome the hardship and disdain I receive from my own kind."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"I post on social media a lot. It is the most transparent way for people to see the situation in the shelter. I post pictures on Facebook, I inform my friends about the situation and problems in the shelter. I ask people for help whenever a dog needs an operation, medicine, therapy, etc.
I only get help from a few people in Europe who love animals, I consider them friends. But unfortunately, the help I receive is not enough to provide for all my dogs and the number of donors is constantly decreasing.
I don't cooperate with any organization and I have no income of my own... I am entirely dependent on the goodwill of kind people to continue to live and despite the difficulties, I know that there are still people who have a heart and want to help. I'm not giving up hope, it will get better... and I hope with all my heart that this campaign will succeed."
