Animal Webaction visited the site 22 July 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The current inflation in Bosnia is one of the highest in the world, everything has become so expensive! The price of kibble in particular is through the roof, it's simply unbearable. There are currently 80 dogs to feed at the pound and even though we are 4 volunteers trying to raise money to support them, we can no longer manage.
People just don't have the money or time to spend on animals at the moment, their priorities are elsewhere. There are hardly any adoptions, we have only had two in the last few months. In fact, we have seen an increase in abandonments for the same reasons. Owners find themselves without money and can no longer care for their pets and the people who used to help us with donations cannot do it as often either...
While we understand that the current situation is difficult for everyone, it simply means that we are running out of options to provide enough food for our dogs! At present, the dogs eat a mixture of kibble and stale bread, but our stock is running out and our lack of funds means that we are unable to buy more. This campaign must succeed... Without it, there will be no kibble and without kibble, there is no life..."
"Every time we get help from Animal Webaction, the change is very visible. The dogs eat their fill and the high quality kibble keeps them healthy and in good harmony with each other. But as soon as we have to resort to other options and give them lower quality food, negative consequences ensue...
When we first became involved at the pound, the dogs were extremely underfed, all crammed into the same room, living in their own feces, fighting over small amounts of food... Although conditions have improved dramatically since we became involved, all the dogs here have that "survival of the fittest" instinct in them - whether they have been living in the pound for a long time, or were rescued from the streets. So naturally, as soon as the kibble runs out, they resort to their old reflexes... and fight.
If inflation continues at this rate and donations do not pick up, we fear that the dogs will start attacking each other and that the strongest will attack the weakest... And as for the street dogs, their rescue will also become impossible. How can we increase the population of dogs in the pound if we cannot feed the ones already there? Outside, they risk being caught and taken to other pounds, which still fit the horrible description above... Quite honestly, the success of this campaign is a matter of life and death for the dogs... literally."
"Mumu is a 3 month old female, we found her outside the pound and took her in a month ago. It is obvious that she was separated from her mother by force... She was so small and fragile when we found her that we had to buy milk and special food for her to survive.
She is getting better every day but we often find her shivering in a corner of the pound... She is still very fearful and traumatised, although she seeks affection. This phase of her growth is very sensitive, if she does not eat high quality kibble in quantity, she will not make it..."
"How can I explain the current situation here in Bosnia... Fuel prices have gone up by about 40%, the same goes for basic necessities such as oil, flour... Just doing the daily grocery shopping has become a constant struggle. Between the 4 of us, we used to be able to set aside something from our salaries to provide for the dogs but the current inflation prevents us from continuing to do so, we can barely make ends meet for ourselves...
We are entirely dependent on good people to continue providing for the dogs but our donations, far from being constant before, have now become highly irregular and in lesser amounts. The municipality isn't helping us either, they just pay the salary of Emir, the only worker.
If we were not there to fundraise for the dogs, in my humble opinion, this place would probably go back to the way it was before and the dogs would suffer a great deal... It's hard, we're constantly begging others and it feels like our options are being reduced to nothing lately. All we're asking for is a little help to feed our dogs. Every fed dog is a proud moment for us!"
"I have always had a special relationship with animals. Ever since I was little, I always had a dog or a cat and whenever I had some food, I gave it to street dogs and cats. Since Hadžići is a small place, Nejira, Dalila, Aida and myself, all knew each other and when the pound opened in 2014, we decided to take our common love for animals to a slighlty higher level.
We fought for a long time to be able to get inside the pound, there were lots of protests and we were collecting money for the fences, houses, food… After some time the worker of the pound came and was more open to understand us. He let us in and we've never left ever since.
Sadly, after so many years of involvement, the municipality's help is still lacking. They opened this place and deemed their work finished from this point forward... The 4 of us girls share tasks among ourselves for the fundraising, partner research etc, all for the dogs' sake but without more support, our actions are limited..."
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Bosnia, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"The list of establishments we have asked for food is huge, we have asked restaurants, food factories, to no avail. The only help we get is from a charity in Germany, but they themselves are affected by the drop in donations and can't help us as frequently as before.
Donations from individuals have dropped drastically and are not as regular as before. At this point, our only option is to beg for your help and that of the good people of France... We really hope that our appeal will be heard!"
