Animal Webaction visited the site 23 July 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The current heat is a huge problem! We have some boxes that are not exposed to the heat but the others are in the sun... The dogs find it very difficult to bear this heat, especially if they have an empty stomach and therefore little strength... We do our best to create shade and give them fresh water regularly, but this is not enough!
With the heat also come fleas and ticks: if the dogs are not well fed, they catch infections and diseases which weaken them even more... Some dogs are even allergic to them, they get sores on their belly and near their tail! So we need to spend a lot of our budget on blisters and preventive treatments to prevent them from getting seriously ill...
Today, the dogs in the shelter are not getting enough to eat: we ration the little kibble we have left by adding some leftovers from restaurants, and sometimes even yoghurt to make them feel full. We are very concerned that if this continues, if the dogs are not eating enough good quality kibble, then their immune systems will continue to weaken and they may not survive the heatwave..."
"We found Timi when he was just a puppy, he is now one and a half years old. When we took him in, he was throwing up everything he ate... He apparently had a bone in his throat! This is the risk when dogs live in the street: they eat what they find and often hurt themselves...
Timi's recovery was very long, we even had to feed him through a tube directly connected to his oesophagus... It is vital for Timi to continue learning to eat with good quality kibble, full of the nutrients he needs to grow up healthy!"
"At the beginning of the summer, there were heavy storms with violent thunderstorms: the street dogs got scared, some were run over by cars because of the panic, some broke their legs, their pelvis, others did not survive... The poor have a miserable life outside the shelter, but unfortunately we cannot afford to take them all in as our capacity is very limited.
For this reason, we go out on the streets to feed all the dogs we can't accommodate, they are completely dependent on our feeding rounds! Without them, they get poisoned by ingesting waste or die of hunger... Lately we have been obliged to buy the cheapest kibble on the market due to a lack of funds, as a result the dogs have diarrhoea, and with this high heat it is a real catastrophe for their health!
If this campaign of kibble were to fail, it would be a disaster, the street dogs would not survive it ! Animal Webaction's last harvest literally saved the lives of our dogs, we hope with all our heart that this miracle will happen again, that we can give a second chance to all these lost souls..."
"Our actions are financed exclusively through donations. We have some regular monthly contributions, but they are not enough to cover all our costs... We have noticed that people have recently decreased their donations, probably due to the current bad financial situation worldwide... So, lately, fundraising is not going as well as we would like...
The problem is that since we don't get as many donations as we did before the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, we have huge debts with our vet! We are also very indebted to the pet shops, we owe them so much money that they don't want to help us anymore if we don't pay some of the debt... We have reached a point of no return, and this kibble campaign could allow us to save the dogs and the association!"
"Unfortunately, many people do not want to sterilise their pets, even though sterilisation is free. They don't realise that the increasing number of dogs on the streets is a huge problem for everyone. We have had a significant impact with sterilisation, which has stabilised the situation in the city, but some owners still think it is unnatural and let their dogs multiply uncontrollably.
Fortunately, there is also a positive side: adoptions are our greatest pride! We are happy when we save a dog's life, take care of it, and receive photos of it with its new family, happy and healthy. It's a simply fantastic feeling that keeps us going!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"The ETN association from Germany is always there for us. With their help we can keep the situation on the streets under control because they fund the sterilisation. Animal Webaction has also helped us for years through online campaigns to get kibble. Other than that, we don't have a regular and as loyal partnership...
We sent a request for help to about seventy companies that have started a socially responsible policy, but only a few responded, and we got minor one-off contributions at the beginning of the year, since then nothing... We plan to reach out to more companies operating in Serbia and ask them for food donations, not financial ones. This would mean a lot to us, especially if they are regular donations! In the meantime, we are alone..."
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
