Animal Webaction visited the site 09 August 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"There are 200 cats at the shelter and they have all been rescued from the streets. I wouldn't usually have that many cats, but their number is increasing because of the abandonments during the Summer holidays. Besides, I cannot turn a blind eye and do nothing when I find one thrown away on the street or in the bin... It breaks my heart too much! I've been rationing their kibble for a few months now. Cats tend to be quite picky about food and have trouble feeding themselves properly on low quality food. With these reduced quantities, the cats are not eating their fill and I can't even afford to buy fish to make up for the lack of kibble...
Everything has become so expensive and this is a worldwide situation. In Morocco as well as in Europe, donations have continued to fall since the pandemic and this has been accentuated by the war in Ukraine... There is inflation: fuel, food, all prices have become prohibitive! I have debts with my kibble suppliers, I can't buy any more without getting into even more hardship. Donations alone have become too small and are no longer enough to feed all the animals of the association... I really don't have enough cat kibble anymore! It's distressing and sad to know that I won't be able to take care of the shelter cats properly if I don't get any kibble."
"The problem with cats is that it is often very difficult to feed them properly, as they have delicate appetites and digestive systems. This makes these animals particularly fussy and fragilised when they don't have quality food at their disposal...
Right now at the shelter, because I had to cut back on kibble, I know that they are not eating as much as they should. Also, fish has become too expensive for me to supplement their meals. I have noticed that the cats are getting thinner and thinner and the lack of kibble has something to do with it.
There are so many of them, I can't keep up financially and I can't take any more in! If I can't get them kibble with this campaign, their quality of life and health will deteriorate. I will also be forced to cut back on their kibble even more and that will really take a toll on the cats!"
"Farid is a very fragile eight-month-old cat. I took him in six months ago, in a pitiful state... I don't know what happened to him and whether he was blind from birth or as a result of a fight... His blindness is a serious handicap which prevents him from living a normal life. He probably compensates a lot with his sense of smell.
He is unable to find his bearings, so he is very dependent on humans to work out where he is, to move around and to feed himself. He must be watched at all times! He is a vulnerable cat and his survival depends on the success of this campaign..."
"The shelter and kibble are entirely financed through donations, which have enormously decreased. Most donations come from abroad and the combined effects of the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and inflation have made it very difficult for many people. Some have lost their jobs and those who can still afford to donate are more likely to do so to Ukraine.
Here, we have no subsidies and the shelter's action is really impacted by this diminution in donations and the rising prices, even if it's only to buy kibble and have it delivered... The carriers have increased their rates as a result of the growing price of fuel. I can't buy kibble anymore because it's become really unaffordable! I also have a lot of debts related to the animals' food...
The association takes care of a very large number of animals, 900 dogs and 200 cats depend on us on a daily basis so, it has become really complicated to feed everyone with such a limited budget. The increasing number of cats we take care of implies bigger expenses in terms of food and veterinary care (many are sick, suffer from allergies and need vaccinations, deworming and treatment)... If this campaign fails, I will simply not be able to feed the cats at the shelter anymore."
"I will never abandon the animals I am responsible for at the shelter. I am happy to know that I am helping them and proud to have saved thousands, despite the stress, financial worries and health problems. I would give my whole life for them! At the shelter, I don't have volunteers but employees. They look after all the animals, feed them and care for them. As for me, I manage all the administrative and financial aspects, the food supply and the veterinary appointments. My association has helped sterilise thousands of street cats in the region over the years, thanks to the campaigns we organise.
I can't remain indifferent when I see a cat in the street... They are often in bad shape, moreover. I try to limit the number of abandoned cats by offering the owners help to have them sterilised and cared for, as long as they keep their cat. It's hard to manage all these things alone, all the time! I lack donations and resources and I am not too hopeful about animal protection in Morocco. I know there are people who can help who don't. It's sad... Awareness should be raised! On the other hand, many people are very kind to cats in this area and that's reassuring. In the past, the association allowed me to help these people take care of their animals (veterinary care, food...) but now I really can't afford it anymore..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Morocco, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"A Swiss association helps us sterilise street animals but otherwise we have no other partnerships. We have a Facebook page where we share information and communicate about our adoption requests, sponsorships, campaigns and calls for donations... Here in Morocco, the State does not aid us at all and we have to find the resources that allow us to continue the shelter on our own.
Donations to help the animals and the shelter have been decreasing ever since the war in Ukraine started, as people who are able to donate are more focused on helping Ukraine... While at the same time, many donors can no longer afford to donate as their living conditions are greatly affected by inflation. The shelter is severely impacted by this situation and it has a direct consequence on the animals in our care: the survival of the cats in the shelter depends on this Animal Webaction campaign!"
When a campaign fails, Animal Webaction cannot deliver the products. The beneficiary doesn't receive anything and the buyers are refunded.
