Animal Webaction visited the site 21 August 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"'At the moment, adoptions are scarce, people are reluctant to adopt an animal at such a complicated time.... The problem is that I now have to take in more dogs than usual at the shelter, and the lack of kibble is having a terrible effect on them. For the last three days I have been thinking of a solution to cover the cost of food without reducing the quantity or quality, but I haven't found anything! Providing kibble for all my dogs is a real challenge: it is a question of time and resources, and I lack both...
My own resources are limited and donations are definitely not enough to buy food for all the dogs. It's getting harder and harder to manage everything by myself. For now, I have a few supporters who give me positive feedback and the strength to continue, and sometimes a few bags of kibble to survive a bit, but it's not enough... I don't have anyone to rely on financially, and I currently only have 3 days of kibble left...
The last campaign with Animal Webaction made me realise that I am not alone and that some people really do care about us! I am so grateful to everyone who clicked and helped us get kibble last time, I really hope this campaign succeeds too, it would mean a lot, it would mean that the fight for dog happiness continues, that I am not alone and that we can all save dogs from starving on the streets!"
"The situation on the streets is catastrophic, the number of abandoned dogs is insane! Even though I would like to help all the dogs in need, I can't afford to take them all in... I rescue the ones that are in a terrible state, and I used to feed the others on the street, hoping to have enough food for them to survive...
Unfortunately, lately I have not been able to feed them at all as I don't even have enough for the dogs in my shelter... I always hope that the street dogs will be fed by the locals, but instead they get hurt, poisoned, or even killed! If I don't go to the streets, watch them and feed them, they have no chance to survive.
Street dogs are considered a threat in this country, people don't accept them and have no empathy! I fear for their lives, no matter if they are sterilised or not, the dogs are always attacked by citizens, poisoned or hit by cars... They always fall ill with no chance of being cured or saved. This kibble campaign must succeed, it must... Otherwise, I won't be able to welcome them in the shelter, they will be condemned..."
"Poor Frida was hit by a car: we found her with broken legs, she was full of parasites, she suffered a lot from this accident... She was lucky that we found her and brought her to the shelter! We took her to the vet where the scans showed that her front legs were all broken!
Four days after her operation we found out that Frida had leishmaniasis... Her legs are better now, but she still needs a lot of rest, medication, and good quality food to recover from this disease. We hope that Frida will recover and find a loving family, but it won't be possible without kibble!"
“Lack of food, drop in donations, financial issues, less adoptions : this is what I have been going through lately. I have debts that I try to pay by the end of each month but it is getting harder and harder. Every dog I take here costs me a minimum of 100 euros, depending on his health condition. Every morning I think about how I'm going to get proper food and medical treatment for dogs…
The situation I am in right now scares me a lot! When I have kibble, my dogs are fed well and healthy, I have less concerns, and it's easier to breathe, but as you can see I started to run out of resources. People still don't donate much, I funded the shelter from my own pocket, and I still do…
I could get great results if people were more responsible, or involved in the rescues, but owners still abandon their pets, leaving them on the streets or by the shelter. I wish they understood that you need to start from yourself, taking care of the environment and each other. I have hope with this campaign because it allows people to feed the dogs with just one click.”
“I've been loving pets and all living creatures since I was a kid. I tried to rescue and save as many dogs as possible, but I couldn't keep a large number at my house, so I opened this shelter where dogs can be fed, loved, and safe. I'm always try to help : if some dog got hit by car, I rescue him, if another is treated badly or even tortured, I'll try my best to take this dog to the shelter. Every day is a real challenge, every single life saved is an accomplishment, every adoption makes me happy and satisfied with my mission.
At the shelter, I work as a carpenter, solve financial issues, pay bills, provide food, feed dogs and monitor their health. Most people think that I'm crazy and that dogs are not really important, but I don't share their opinion. My mission here is not only to bring dogs from the streets to the shelter, but also to find a home for them. I'm so happy when I manage to find homes and loving families for my dogs : it gives me hope that soon the rest of stray dogs will be rescued, and I know my action matters. If I can't save them… no one will.
At the moment, I have 4 people with me : 2 employed part-time, and 2 volunteers who usually visit us once a week, and help me with finding homes for dogs. Some people come to cuddle and play with dogs, I'm glad to see that not everyone around is ignorant towards dogs. There is a public service which sterilizes homeless dogs, and provides medical help for dogs in distress. However, after 2 weeks or one month at most, those dogs are brought back in the streets to the same spots… If I could I would save them all, but my problem is that I lack funds and resources!”
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Macedonia which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
“I always hope that people will pay attention to my shelter and support me, but the truth is I manage everything by myself mostly. I have a job and a small business in Skopje, so I sacrifice my own funds to make dogs happier, that's why this place is called the “Happy Shelter”!
However, we've tried our best to influence donations, and find people who could help us but it did not work! Unfortunately we're all by ourselves in this country, our volunteers are waiting for the response of an organization from the Netherlands, which could help us with adoptions, but we haven't heard from them yet.
One of our supporters who recently adopted a dog from our shelter tried to help us with fundraisings and raising people's awareness about the Happy Shelter, so more people could learn about our rescues and might donate 2-3 pounds, but at the moment, we haven't found any other organization that could help us with food… This campaign is vital for us!”
