Animal Webaction visited the site 25 August 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The current situation is very difficult, inflation is getting to us! Costs have gone up overall but dog food has become so expensive that I can only dream of buying it. We haven't had any kibble since May, we only feed the dogs chicken scraps... We live from today to tomorrow, without any help.
Three or four people on social networks promised to bring food but they never came, which I can understand because it is a lot of money for an average person in Serbia. That said, when it comes to leaving dogs and puppies at my door, people don't seem to think twice... My pension is too low to cover all the costs, I can't keep up!
There is very little food left today and we have nothing for tomorrow. Every day, the noose around us seems to tighten a little more... Please help us! My dogs need this arrival of kibble now more than ever..."
"The consequences of lack of food are already noticeable, the dogs are nervous, they fight over food. I try my best to not let it get too far but sometimes there's nothing I can do about it. Last Friday the dogs were further irratated because of the storm and by the time I managed to separate them it was too late, one dog was injured...
If I reduce their portions further, they will become even more aggressive and I really do not want that to happen. There are also health problems because there is no variety of food. The chicken scraps I give them don't have the vitamins and nutrients they need to stay healthy.
I really need this collection as it is literally the only way I can provide quality food for my dogs! If the collection fails and I can't find enough to feed them, I will be forced to close my shelter. I don't even dare to think about such an outcome, I am terribly worried..."
"I found Gara in the street with her four puppies next to her. She was very hungry, skinny and aggressive, she would not let me near her puppies. She was walking with difficulty, it was clear that she had been hit by a car. After a while of coming to feed them every day, she finally trusted me and let me take her and her puppies to the shelter.
Her injured leg was infected and had to be amputated. Even today, it is difficult for her to get around, so of course fighting for food is not an option for her. Gara is entirely dependent on my ability to feed her and at the moment my only hope of doing so is with this campaign..."
"We have tried all ways to raise funds, but nothing has worked. Our Facebook page doesn't have many followers, the donations we receive are very small. We do not have any partnerships with other organizations in our country or abroad either.
Our adoptions have also been very low for some time, only 3 puppies have been adopted in the last period. I am in debt to the vet and even the price of the chicken scraps I buy has gone up! I really try to make sure that my dogs don't lack anything: I mow the grass, I clean the yard every day, I take the dogs to the vet, I pet them, I talk to them, I give them love... After each day I'm exhausted because I do everything myself and I'm not getting any younger.
I love what I do, no matter how difficult it is, but all I ask for in return is a little help so that my dogs have enough to eat! I need 40-50 kilos daily to feed all my dogs properly, there are too many dogs and my pension is too low, I cannot do it alone..."
"The shelter was established in June 2019. There are fewer dogs on the streets since I opened the shelter, but the people still treat stray dogs badly. People are very strange here, they mistreat dogs for no reason. They abandon them, beat them in the street, poison them... I don't understand why they do this and I never will.
I have no local support, the mere fact that I have a dog shelter instantly casts me as a weirdo. I really hope that at some point there will be more good people who will want to adopt dogs and really love and care for them. But in the meantime, I have to try to be healthy so that I can look after them for as long as possible, because I'm all they have!
Even though I know my life would be very different if I didn't take care of the dogs, that I wouldn't have to worry about feeding them and that I could enjoy life in a different way, it wouldn't be my way. These dogs are a part of me and I love what I do, no matter how hard it gets. I'm proud of all the dogs I've taken in myself at the shelter, because they are so good, loyal and know how to love unconditionally."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"The number of dogs in my care keeps increasing as people keep abandoning their unsterilised pets on the streets and I have to bring them here to keep them out of harm's way... The donations I receive are very small, and even though every penny counts, the dogs' needs are too great, we need more funds! I really don't know who to contact. I have no one to contact in Serbia, here it is very difficult to find donors or organisations that want to help the shelters.
A local TV station recently came to me and made a small programme about my shelter. Unfortunately, it was not very useful because only local people watch this channel, and their awareness of animal issues cannot seem to be changed... I really hope that with this campaign, people abroad will see the problems my shelter is facing and maybe they will even decide to help my dogs! A good deed is always important and in our case, getting this kibble would drastically improve our situation."
