Animal Webaction visited the site 01 September 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The collateral damage brought by COVID is still very much there, in fact, it's even worse... with the numerous abandonments, reproduction has increased and we had to take a considerable number of new dogs at the shelter. It was already difficult for us to provide for our protégés before, but now it has become mission impossible!
We have had to cut back on the quantities we provide and we have also lowered the quality of the kibble we give the dogs. We have been rationing for at least ten days and today we only have enough left to last 2 days at the most...
The lack of kibble is the nightmare of my life. The dogs are more numerous, the kibbles are consumed much faster and with the prices exploding, we can't keep up! If I don't find a solution quickly to feed my dogs, it will be a disaster for them and for me. I can't bear to see them sick or starving..."
"We already see the consequences of the lack of kibble on the dogs in the shelter: they are skinny, have diarrhea, dental problems, kidney problems... Hunger also makes them more aggressive, which leads to fights and injuries, which then generate additional costs, necessary for the purchase of medication... it's a vicious circle!
Since we are already struggling to feed the dogs in the shelter, our actions with the street dogs are also inevitably impacted. We are forced to skip feeding rounds, we can't feed them as much, nor as frequently as we used to. The dogs are starving and they are disrupting public order by looking for food in any way they can...
In less than a week, I lost 7 street dogs... While investigating, I discovered that a vehicle of the municipality had taken them away... They took them to the pound to kill them! My dogs were vaccinated, neutered and tagged... It is simply abominable. In total between the shelter and the streets, there are more than 300 souls who rely on me. Getting kibble is not a comfort for either of them, it is a matter of life and death!"
"Funny is an approximately 5-year-old male, he was dropped off in front of the shelter with his brother Joy when they were only a week old. Unfortunately Funny got into a fight at the shelter and developed an eye infection. Because of his treatment, he has a lot of diarrhea and has lost a lot of weight.
He needs to regain weight and energy and this obviously requires an adapted diet, both in quantity and quality! As long as portions are rationed, it will be impossible for him to recover completely. He deserves to be able to play and thrive like he used to and for that we need kibble!"
"I used to be able to finance the shelter with my professional activity and with donations but since the beginning of COVID, everything has gone downhill. I do a few jobs here and there but it is not enough to finance all the needs of the shelter and the donations are almost non-existent.
Kibble supply is very difficult, prices have increased a lot in Morocco and to make matters worse, we have suffered a drought; our wells are completely dry... We are obliged to buy water tanks and this does not help our financial situation, far from it. We have veterinary debts, debts with the kibble supplier, late payments for rent, employees' salaries... and here are other expenses that are added on!
When you have only one problem in your life, it is already difficult to find a solution but when you have a ton of problems at the same time, it becomes almost insurmountable... All this is really exhausting, it makes me sick. I think about my animals 24 hours a day, I live in worry and fear all the time, my health has taken a hit. It pains me tremendously to see my dogs suffer in silence and innocence because I know that if we just had a little more support it could be avoided..."
"I have always had a soft spot for the animal cause. Yes, I could have decided to get involved in other causes, with children for example; but for me, animals are even more in need because they don't have the means to express themselves or to say when they are hungry or thirsty or in pain... So I chose to be their voice!
I have been involved in animal protection for almost 10 years and my observation is clear: the only solution to the stray animal problem in Morocco is the TNVR method (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return). If stray dogs are not taken care of, they develop diseases that can be transmitted to humans such as rabies, and a harmonious cohabitation becomes impossible!
I hope that with my interventions in the street, the fact that I talk about it all the time, the fact that the media is starting to talk about this subject too, that things will eventually change. People need to realize that our actions save lives in both directions: for the animals as well as for the humans!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Morocco, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble everywhere in the country.
"We don't have any adoptions at the moment... In general, foreigners find it expensive and time-consuming to go through the protocol to get a Moroccan dog to travel. Moreover, the United States, which was a great opportunity to adopt our dogs, has just closed its borders to animals from Morocco. And locally, very few Moroccans want beldis. We find ourselves with a lot of animals in our care, many new arrivals but very few departures...
The problem is that financially, we can't keep up! We don't receive any help from other associations or even private organizations, my personal resources are dwindling and donations are constantly decreasing. We need help to fill the dogs' bowls and see them happy, healthy and appeased..."
