Animal Webaction visited the site 11 September 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"There are a lot of new dogs on the streets at the moment. If usually there were around 20 street dogs in my area, now they're more than 50... And I am getting calls almost every day from people telling me they found an injured dog on the street. I am shocked by the ignorance of the local drivers here, the lives of animals mean nothing to them...
While life on the streets is hard for every stray out there, life at the dumps is even worse. Dogs and puppies are continuously being abandonned in this place where parasites, diseases, malnutrition and bad health are rampant... I go there every day to monitor the situation but sadly, I cannot feed everyone at the moment...
I am almost out of food and I am worried that I will have to stop feeding dogs on the streets and at the dumps very soon. It's the worst timing ever, especially since winter is coming and the dogs need to eat more when it's cold outside to survive! I don't want to see the dogs having to fight for their lives, I want to help them survive and eventually find loving homes... But without food, none of these goals are achievable and the chances of these dogs surviving are actually lower than low..."
"Bear is a 2 months old male, he has been on the street for about 2 weeks. He actually broke through the fence to my family's house, looking for food...that's how we found him. I am sure that someone left him on the street to die!
We found him in a bad health condition, he had skin diseases and leishmaniasis. He also has a bacterial intestinal infection, which doesn't allow him to gain weight... He lacks energy and he absolutely needs to get more portions of kibble daily, to eventually cain weight and survive on the streets!"
"The dogs in the shelter are currently eating kibble once a day and it's their only meal. Some of the dogs have already started to lose weight because the quality of the kibble is also very poor... I feel a lot of pressure and I am lost...
Lately I have been taking in a lot of dogs that need to have major surgeries. It is difficult to monitor and control their health, and I also need resources to help each of them recover! These additional expenses continue to finish off the association's finances, which were already at an all-time low. I have so much to focus on, so many unhealthy dogs that I need to help and yet I can't even buy what they need most to survive.... Getting this kibble would save their lives!"
"Tyron is a 10 year old male, I found him at the dump. He is a white dog but when I found him his fur was almost black, full of parasites... I had to persevere and wait a long time to finally gain his trust and bring him to the shelter.
Tyron is an old dog, his body is starting to give out little by little, he has problems with the bones in his leg and he lacks energy. He's also a large dog, he needs plenty of good food to keep his health stable and survive the winter ahead!"
"We do not receive donations from Macedonia and our foreign donations have decreased significantly. The world is in crisis and our supporters have to take care of their own families. In addition, some people who are still able to donate have chosen to redirect their funds to Ukraine, so overall we are receiving far fewer donations than before.
With the number of dogs we care for on the streets, in the dumps and in our shelter, our veterinary bills for surgeries, amputations and castrations are skyrocketing... I sacrifice my own funds to provide kibble as much as I can, but my resources are limited... I am in debt and can no longer do it.
I wish I had more support around me, there is so much to do for the animals here and nothing is possible without regular help! I wish people would understand that having a shelter, doing rescues... it's all a lifestyle. It's not something you can choose to do on a periodic basis!"
"My love for animals has been brought down by my family, everyone around me was always involved in saving dogs one way or another! I am no exception, I've literally devoted my whole life to saving the lives of endangered animals. Thanks to the rescues and the spaying I do, there are less dogs and puppies on the streets.
I'm especially happy for those dogs who had very small chances to survive but eventually got better and now live in loving families! Stories like these just warm my heart and inspire me a lot to continue saving more dogs in my area, even if they look unsavable.
Over the years, hundreds of dogs got adopted thanks to our association. I'm so proud of that! This past month, we've had a regain in adoptions, more than of our 20 dogs got adopted. It happened because of the UK ban for dogs from Romania, which is very sad, but this situation helped us find more homes for our dogs. That's a huge victory for us, but it's also short lived... Because for every dog that's leaving, there's always many more to come and take their place. The battle is far from being over and that's exactly why we need help to continue!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Macedonia which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"The situation of abandoned animals in Macedonia is a real disaster! We are really struggling these days; people keep abandoning their animals, there are many dogs in the streets and in the dumps. We try to help as many dogs as possible, but the donations we receive are not enough and there are far too many dogs! We need more support to help all the dogs that need us and in the immediate future, that starts with being able to give them a proper meal...."
