Animal Webaction visited the site 11 September 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I have 190 dogs at the shelter, so it’s very crowded… Along with the economic decline, adoptions have dropped and many people who had adopted dogs during the pandemic now seem to abandon them for financial reasons… Such an influx of dogs makes the available space at the shelter dwindle, while my kibble stock decreases much faster!
With only 5 kibble bags left, I barely have enough to feed the dogs for a day and a half… I try to save as much of it as possible, so I’ve been rationing their portions for three weeks. Recently, they’re getting some slaughterhouse’s leftovers in minimal amounts. I won’t be able to feed them with it for long, now. I can tell they’re not eating their fill as they’re losing their strength…
I have no money at all and barely any donors either… Times are extremely hard and inflation makes it impossible to cover all the shelter’s expenses… Buying kibble is my biggest difficulty, as it has become too expensive for me to cope! I worry a lot about my dogs’ fate. I really need this campaign to succeed to feed all of them, otherwise, the aftermath will be tragic…"
"The shelter is absolutely full and I have to reduce the food quantities to feed everyone… Lately, the dogs don’t even eat kibble but poor quality minced meat! I’m really concerned about the effects this combination has on their health and behaviour. I can tell they’re weakened and, lacking space, they’re getting more aggressive towards one another... It’s stressful and dangerous!
I mostly rescue dogs from the streets: they experienced dreadful living conditions, being abandoned, abused and neglected… They’re survivors, but their past took a toll on them… Among them are many weak mothers with their puppies. They’re the most vulnerable, some of them have mange and they need kibble in order to properly feed their puppies and heal…
I’m running out of solutions to feed my dogs and it’s my biggest fear! My cries for help aren’t successfully answered enough to get more food… If it keeps going like this, I’m scared some dogs will get too sick and some others’ aggressiveness will turn into fights… There will be deaths and I can’t let that happen, so this campaign can’t fail!"
"Draco is a shy, timid, five-year-old dog who was found near the dump… Sadly, he has Sticker's sarcoma and pancreatic cancer. It is one of the worst diseases ever for dogs and without kibble, he won’t make it! To build up enough strength and handle his heavy medication, Draco absolutely needs this kibble delivery! It’s his only chance to live…"
"With the global economy going down, I feel like there is a rising panic among people… They’re unsure about the future and aren’t financially safe… This is one of the main reasons why there are less people adopting dogs, but more of them abandoning their pets on the streets, lately. There are fewer donors than ever, too… This whole situation directly impacts the shelter's actions and my dogs: I have more dogs to take care of but less means to do it properly. Online fundraisers aren’t working much, as some usual donors can’t donate anymore because they’re struggling too…
I can’t buy kibble anymore, donations are really the only way for me to cover the dogs’ needs (whether it is for food or for vet care) but they’re just too scarce, now… I have many veterinary care debts and they’re getting bigger by the minute! There is a vet who tries to help me as much as possible but even them are affected by the crisis… I often have to give up on surgeries for some dogs, because I can’t pay for it anymore… My dogs rely on the success of this kibble campaign in order to have something to eat for the next few weeks, while I rely on it to save more dogs from terrible situations…"
"I’m overjoyed when I think I managed to keep the shelter standing after so many years! But there is still a long way to go before people understand that it’s only through collective action that change for strays can happen! I can’t be the only person to care, it’s impossible to achieve great improvement in this city, all alone!
Yet, I know my actions are impactful, in the area: there are less strays in the streets. But when I see the recent increase in the number of abandonments, I know awareness still needs to be raised! I get encouragement and people verbally support my actions… but too few of them actually take action and help the cause! It’s sad…
I may have had some dogs adopted in the last few months, but not so much, unfortunately... Many dogs need help and my shelter is really vital for them, especially when I see the amount of lost souls struggling to survive in harsh environments and being mistreated by humans… These dogs deserve better lives than that!"
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"There is a French organisation that helps me with the promotion of dogs for adoption and collections, which is a very welcomed and appreciated help! However, they lack funds and volunteers, so their room for manoeuvre is reduced these days: they’re affected by the economic context too... Donors are getting fewer and fewer and the donations I manage to obtain aren’t lasting at all. Facebook is my main platform to raise awareness, share dogs’ photos and stories and also, for adoptions and online fundraisers and collections…
Over the last months, these attempts haven't been effective enough to cover all the needs for space, care and food. In fact, it’s less and less fruitful and it deeply affects me on an emotional level. Now that new abandoned dogs appear in town nearly daily, I really want to save these struggling souls… I just don’t have the resources to do so and I fear that the worst is yet to come! I really want this kibble campaign to work for my dogs’ survival and I want to thank you all for your help."
