Animal Webaction visited the site 24 September 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I take care of 318 dogs at the shelter, along with many puppies… Their number is never decreasing for different reasons, such as the huge drop in adoptions (mostly due to the British border ban), or also the fact that many abandoned dogs aren’t sterilised… The shelter is full and it’s an everyday challenge to feed that many dogs!
Now I only have enough kibble for two days and I often end up having to reduce the dogs’ portions in order to feed them all. I rely on donations and sponsorships to feed them, but I lost most of those: people are impacted by inflation, they can’t donate the same amounts and quantities as they would before… It’s been the hardest year ever for me, at the shelter…
The difficulties keep adding up and if I want to continue rescuing dogs, I need more donations, more adoptions and kibble... The latter is the most urgent need, just to properly feed each one of my dogs! They completely rely on me and on kibble to survive. I’m very scared, I can’t imagine looking at them feeling hungry over their empty bowls… This campaign must not fail!"
"There are just too many days when I know my dogs don’t eat enough… The main difficulty when it comes to getting kibble is that I’m fully dependent on donations and, since they’re diminishing a lot, I have to cut back on the dogs’ food quantities more often. The amounts I get through donations have become too scarce and too occasional, so I am really concerned it will badly impact my dogs’ states of both physical and mental health.
Besides, as the shelter is out of space and almost out of kibble, many dogs in the streets (among whom are many females with their litters of puppies) will have to remain there and fend for themselves, feeding on trash. In this harsh environment, they literally have to fight for food… No one is helping them and this is heartbreaking because I myself lack the resources to feed and rescue these stray dogs, too.
I do my best to give the shelter’s dogs a happier, more peaceful existence, compared to when they were in the pounds or in the streets… But without kibble, it will all be done in vain! Having the dogs kept locked in the kennels with nothing to eat will have awful consequences! They also need to build up strength and energy to face the extremely cold temperatures that are coming soon, which won’t be possible without this kibble delivery...”
"I rescued Princess from the public shelter, where the living conditions are far from ideal for dogs: strays are caught daily (so the pound is overcrowded) and they don’t get enough kibble each day to cover their daily needs... She is a frail, ageing yet very friendly dog! She probably has a heavy past behind, living in harsh conditions, but she still has the strength to carry on. I want to make sure she doesn't lack of love and comfort and that all her needs are met, so she can age serenely and healthily at the shelter. She relies on quality kibble in proper quantities to get all the nutrients and vitamins she needs to keep going…"
"In the past, I had less dogs and more sponsors. Now, it’s the reverse situation and it makes it harder and harder to finance every shelter-related expense! Losing so many sponsors really affected my ability to provide the dogs with needed care and kibble: more than 70% of my dogs are left with no sponsorship…
I have huge debts (vet care, kibble supply…) and I really don’t know how I am going to repay them! Because of my current financial situation and the current global state of the economy, I took the decision to give up on my employee, as I had to choose between paying his salary or paying to get kibble… I prioritised the dogs and even by doing so, I can’t buy enough kibble.
I only have the same few historical donors on whom I can still count... But I wonder until when? If I hadn't foreign support, I wouldn’t be able to continue running the shelter and saving dogs, improving their lives… I don’t have any type of support from the State and I basically have no local support in the area either… At this point, without this Animal Webaction campaign, I don’t know how I will feed my dogs."
"When I created this shelter six years ago, I really thought many people from my city would get involved in this project. I thought it could allow me to raise awareness on animal protection issues like the strays’ treatment and living conditions or the importance of pets’ sterilisation… Yet here we are, six years later: hundreds more dogs at the shelter and a bitter taste of hopelessness…
Running this shelter is like a constant fight between people who don’t understand the animals’ suffering and me, being alone… Giving these unwanted dogs a chance to live a decent life is my daily struggle; I’m trying hard, from dawn to dusk, to cover their needs… Seeing them having happier times at the shelter is so rewarding! It’s just getting harder each day...
Too many people in Romania still don’t sterilise their pets and as a result, I’ve never had so many puppies under my care! If there weren’t animal lovers or shelters like mine, whole generations of dogs would spend their lives in the streets, only to die painfully or starve… These innocent beings deserve better! It’s so unbearable to think I’ll soon be unable to provide my dogs with kibble..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"Supporters from abroad are really the ones paying attention to my shelter… A British organisation helps me with sponsorship: they actually cover most of my sponsored dogs’ expenses (which is less than 30% of my shelter’s dogs). Otherwise, a small number of regular individual supporters helps me with donations or the remaining sponsorship. Without them, I don’t know how I could take care of the dogs… I’m always calling for help and reaching out to other people or organisations, mostly to get kibble, but they’re in difficult situations too and prioritise those they’ve already been helping. It is nearly impossible to find new sources of support and kibble supply...
Dog lovers like me are mostly left alone handling their shelters: the State doesn't help us and we clearly outnumber the amount of donations or support we can get… Additionally, the British border ban has prevented me from sending many dogs to adoption, so it truly reduces my ability to rescue and feed dogs! Before the day comes when there won’t be any stray in the streets and public pounds will be History, there’s still a lot of work ahead and many more dogs to feed!"
