"I have 250 dogs at the shelter and this number has increased despite the sterilisation campaigns I organised locally. Instead of seizing these opportunities to sterilise their pets, people rather bring me their puppies or worse, tie their pregnant dogs with chains to the shelter’s gates, knowing I obviously won’t let these dogs down…
I worry a lot… Adoptions are dropping, some are even cancelled due to the British border ban and I really lack fundings. I take more and more dogs in and soon, I’ll be out of kibble to feed everybody! I’ll have no other choice but to drastically cut back on their food, just to try and stretch my remaining stock until it’s completely dried up… It will turn out really bad for them!
Getting kibble is my main issue and it’s harder than ever to get it funded now, as the economy plunges… My dogs are all like family to me and I always prioritise their needs over mine. But with so many dogs under my care and continuously decreasing donations, if this campaign fails, it’s a matter of days before I can no longer feed them…"
"My dogs currently eat low quality kibble. Despite cutting back on my personal expenses, it’s the only type I can buy at the moment… Such poor quality food does not provide them with proper amounts of essential nutrients and vitamins. It’s unhealthy! And as my stock dwindles, I’m really scared it will have nasty, potentially fatal effects…
The combination of poor quality kibble in smaller and smaller amounts will affect my dogs’ behaviour... The lack of food makes them more nervous which leads to aggression and dangerous fights! Health-wise, nausea, diarrhoea, skin diseases and even rickets are also common consequences we've already experienced.
At this pace, with the number of dogs already under my care and the constant influx of dogs being abandoned right in front of my doors, it won’t be long before my kibble stock is completely empty... I wouldn't forgive myself if my dogs suffered the consequences of my inability to feed them… I can't emphasise how important and absolutely vital this kibble delivery is right now!"
"Cici is a solitary, seven-year-old purebred shepherd dog who was used most of her life as a breeder, her former owners made her have one litter of puppies after another… Her living conditions were extremely damaging for both her mental and physical health.
She was regularly starved as a punishment, which is why she’s emaciated and she has developed huge mammary tumours that constantly bleed… They get bigger and bigger, but Cici can’t get them removed as long as she’s weak and underweight…
She needs constant care and attention… She has a treatment (mostly to heal her pain) but a surgery would change her life! She still has faith in life, she just urgently needs to gain more weight. Without healthy, quality kibble in proper amounts for her size, her condition will decline and she will perish fast…"
"Before the pandemic and the inflation, online fundraisers and collections worked a little better; people donated as much as their means allowed. Now, people feel financially insecure and struggle to make ends meet. They save money and prioritise their personal expenses over shelters’ dogs… I only have 2 regular donors from Romania… Their help is precious but they can’t donate much either. I have no support from the State at all and there’s a real lack of concern towards pets in this country - they’re usually disregarded as they’re not farm animals who produce raw goods like milk or meat.
Donations are my only way to fund kibble for the dogs… I can’t have a job: taking care of all my dogs on my own is a full-time, 24/7 job! I don’t have the financial resources to afford an employee and I’ve been sacrificing myself for a long time to try and cover my dogs’ needs. My unpaid bills stack up, but that’s the only way to get kibble; it’s just my top priority for my dogs… But now, I’m in such a disastrous situation, facing this lack of financial support… If this kibble campaign fails, all my hard work to save the dogs and provide them with a safe and loving environment will be done in vain!"
"I started the shelter 10 years ago, by rescuing one dog: Gogu… I found him as a puppy, in a terrible state: his wounds were eaten by worms. He’s disabled, but alive and I’m so thankful for this! He paved the way for my next rescues and I named the shelter after him. From then on, I couldn’t go past any abandoned, vulnerable dog without helping them. I took them in one by one, with the purpose of providing them with a safe, caring environment and finding them new loving homes… Now, I’m a ‘full-time parent’ to 250 dogs: adoptions are fewer than new arrivals, so it’s a hard job to take care and feed everyone with low donations and no volunteers…
I dedicate my whole time to my dogs so they can have a better life. Seeing them happy and healthy is a reward! Apart from my boyfriend’s help on some week-ends, I’m all alone… Locally, my work is seen as a useless waste of time: some people even call me the ‘crazy dog lady’! They don’t understand why I self-sacrifice for dogs… I clearly lack local support and get criticised, but I rather focus on the dogs. Many would have died without my shelter: strays are ignored, regularly abused or even poisoned. And from what I witnessed at the public pounds where dogs are beaten, they’re safer with me… And I don’t mind not having the time to eat some days! I’m just desperate to get any kind of help and now even more in the form of kibble donations…”
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Romania which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"A German organisation is doing their best to support me, but my shelter isn’t the only one that they’re helping, so it’s not easy for them to cover all the expenses for so many animals’ needs (vet care, food…)! I tried to reach out to other organisations to seek out further help, but it has never worked - I don’t speak English and it’s a big disadvantage!
I use Facebook to try and reach out to kind people, communicate, raise awareness, promote dogs and also collect… I post many photos and videos of my dogs and if at the beginning, people would help me as much as their means allowed, it’s different now… The economy is declining so fundraisers have never been so unfruitful! I don’t get a lot of support anymore.
Getting some help is becoming harder each day and I haven’t had many adoptions happening either… I may receive encouragement or “likes”... But what I need the most are actual actions or donations: I have so many animals under my care! I can’t sleep at night, wondering how and where I can get some kibble to feed all my dogs…"
