Animal Webaction visited the site 26 September 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"We have had a large influx of dogs since the crisis started, back in spring. We went from 90 dogs on average between our two shelters, to 135 in just a few months! And despite the amount of dogs we've taken in, the streets are still full of dogs and the local pounds as well... This makes us feel powerless and desperate.
The current inflation only makes the situation worse, everything has become so expensive! We can barely provide for ourselves so you can imagine how difficult it is to provide for 135 dogs... Honestly nothing positive has happened in the last few months, we're just fighting one battle after another and things continue to get more difficult each day.
Our donations have also dropped due to the prevailing financial instability. We have no food stock and we have no funds to buy more than 2 bags a day... That's not enough to feed all the dogs in our care! The situation is crazy, surreal even... Honestly we feel on the verge of a breakdown..."
"The dogs currently eat the cheapest kibble available on the market. They are not happy with it and they don't eat enough of it either...We had to resort to rationing their portions a month ago, what they eat is just enough to keep them hanging on, but it's definitely not enough for proper nourishment...
The dogs have diarrhea, they get weak and vulnerable and the ones that have issues with digestion are getting skinnier... The lack of food also makes them more prone to getting viruses and infections, we're experiencing a chain of negative consequences...
Many of the dogs under our care are handicapped and need the utmost care and the best nutrition possible to stay healthy. We also have a lot of newly rescued dogs who are vulnerable and need large quantities of food to recover. If we hadn't rescued these dogs, there is no doubt they would have perished on the streets. But if they are not properly fed once they are here, we are back to square one! It will be catastrophic if we can’t find kibble..."
"Spiro is a street dog that has been under our care for a few months, he's in Jovica's shelter at the moment. He was hit by a car, he has a broken spine and a torn spinal cord. We are doing exercises in order for him to get well but it looks like he will hardly ever walk except in a wheelchair... He also has serious urinary problems so he is under therapy as well and needs good food to keep him standing. For Spiro and for the many other handicapped dogs under our care, a return to the streets is impossible! He needs us to survive and we need this kibble delivery to be able to continue taking care of him!"
"Our donations have dropped drastically, we have several thousand euros of debt at the vet office and we can't raise enough money for the dogs' medical treatments. We had to postpone some of our dog’s operations due to our lack of funds, it is a very big amount needed and we just don't receive the donations to cover it! We also postponed microchipping a few dogs.
Our main focus right now is on getting food and everything else unfortunately becomes secondary... But even in redirecting all our donations on food, we just don't receive enough funds to buy the quantities that our dogs need! Our adoptions are also at a standstill, a lot of people have stopped adopting because they don’t know which direction this global situation will take...
We have a lot of mouths to feed and we can't do it alone! It is simply not possible to take care of everything in the shelter without donations... This campaign is all we have at the moment, it is the only hope we have. We have no one else to turn to."
"I have always loved animals, I started rescuing them with my granddad back when I was little... and when I rescued my first handicapped dog later on, I realized that it was my calling to rescue powerless animals on the streets! For the last 7 years myself and Jovica have been completely dedicated to them, we enjoy working with them, watching them improve. The icing on the cake is when we get to send them away to their forever homes - those are definitely our happiest and proudest moments!
Despite these happy moments, I must say that there are also many hardships. The environment we evolve in, the country we evolve in, neither are conducive to running an animal shelter in peaceful conditions. The authorities are trying to destroy our work instead of supporting us by carring out random veterinary inspections, we are targeted and not just us, but every association that rescues dogs!
We are at war with the authorities because instead of caring about the welfare of the animals, they want to legalise euthanasia...Crazy, I know ! Animal laws aren't being respected and people who don't obey the law aren't being punished either. I am really afraid that nothing will change in this country regarding abandoned animals..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibbles.
"The fundraising is not going well right now. First, it was coronavirus, and now the inflation brought by the war... People are very hesitant to donate as they're financially unstable and are trying to look out for themselves. Naturally, our donations have dropped as a result while we are being hit hard by the successive price increases. It's a disastrous combination!
wo French organisations help us with some veterinary costs for specific dogs but we get no help with kibble. The state doesn't help us either, in fact, they actively target us with random demands and requests, and try to force us to put some dogs back on the streets... and meanwhile, while humans are fighting each other, it's the animals that suffer... The streets are still full, so is our shelter, and we need kibble to help all these innocent dogs!"
