Animal Webaction visited the site 29 October 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"Through our Hayat project, over the years we have sterilized, identified and vaccinated more than 3,400 street dogs as well as dogs from poor families. In total, we have sterilized about 12% of the dog population in Tangier. We are very proud of this and we know that sterilization is the only solution! But despite our efforts to make a difference around the stray management issue in our city, dog slaughters continue to occur... A culling operation led by the authorities is actually in progress right now... This situation breaks my heart.
Every day, I'm running in all parts of the city to prevent more cullings and try to save as many dogs as possible. Unfortunately, given the number of stray dogs in Tangier, this is no easy task. And to make matters worse, we have no kibble left to feed them and no money to place a new order either...
We have to find kibble, it's literally a matter of life and death at this point! The strays must be well fed, otherwise we will have no leverage to convince the authorities to stop their cruel actions... We are at war... and we really need all the help we can get to get through this. Please help us make this campaign a success! it's the only way to save the innocent souls of Tangier..."
"In the last few weeks, we have rescued more than 150 of our tagged dogs from the streets, in fear that they would be slaughtered by the authorities... We now have 615 dogs at the sanctuary, we are completely saturated and of course we should increase the amount of kibble we give them, but our resources are insufficient! The dogs' portions have been rationed for about 3 weeks...
The dogs are starving, malnourished and this cannot continue. Many fights have already taken place and many dogs have lost weight. There are only a few bags of kibble left, enough to last a few more days at the most, by rationing to the maximum. If we don't find a solution soon, the dogs' health will continue to decline and the fights will increase... Neither of these scenarios is acceptable! Watching my babies weaken and fight is the worst thing ever...
Every dog we rescue and bring to the sanctuary is a dog that will not be put down by the authorities, but it is still our responsibility to feed them... We can't let them down! We must provide them with sufficient amounts of kibble to ensure their survival and frankly, we can only do it with your help..."
"We rescued Rama from the street when he was a puppy. He survived parvovirus as a puppy and was doing well until a few weeks ago, but look at him now... he has lost so much weight you can see his ribs!
Rama is always glued to me; he has only known the sanctuary his whole life, and he will need us forever. A return to the streets is impossible for him! He needs good food, our love and care to be healthy. He will not be able to survive any longer on kibble deprivation.... !"
"All prices have gone up due to inflation...and donations are only going down! Although we have monthly donors whom we thank dearly, the amount of donations we receive is nowhere near enough to cover the needs of so many animals, sanctuary and streets combined. And because of the lack of donations, we have more debts, less kibble, much more physical and mental work but also less staff, because we can't pay them all anymore... The situation has become unmanageable!
We owe a fortune to the kibble supplier and we have no solution for the moment, except to ask for your help! We can't order kibble until our debts are paid off... I really fear for the well being of our babies... I have already sold all my belongings to invest in this project. I have no choice but to appeal to your generosity... my dogs need you!"
"When I was 8 years old, I was traumatized because the dogs in my neighborhood that I loved and fed were poisoned, some were still alive with convulsions, others were dead. One dog with puppies was having seizures, and her puppies were trying to suckle. I swore to myself when I was 8 years old that I would change my country, because these atrocities are unacceptable, cruel, against religion, against everything.
My goal was to save all the animals in Tangier, that was my aspiration. And of course, I realized when I had more than 400 dogs at the sanctuary that this was not possible, and so we created the Hayat project in 2016, to sterilize, vaccinate and identify as many dogs as possible, and return them to their territories. We also raised awareness among more than 100,000 children, it had a huge impact! Children are raising awareness among their parents and neighbors, creating a snowball effect... But even if the progress within the population is noticeable, a real change can only come if the laws change too! Slaughter is not the solution... We must do better and choose humane alternatives."
Animal Webaction has a logistics center in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"The Brigitte Bardot Foundation has contributed to the sterilization of 400 street dogs in Tangier this year. But apart from this occasional help, we are 99% dependent on private donations. I make 9 publications a day on social media on average, to remind people that we need help for medication, for kibble, for the vet.... Some people recognize our work and help us as much as their means allow but unfortunately it's not enough... the dogs are far too many!
A British production, Enderley Pictures, has recently made a mini-film about our project Hayat. I really hope that through this initiative, more people will see what we do and decide to help us by donating. Together we can move mountains but alone, I cannot do anything! The same goes for this campaign... Please share as much as you can, and donate, we really, really need your help to feed our babies..."
