Animal Webaction visited the site 27 November 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I take care of 85 dogs at the shelter and there’s no more room in the kennels; it’s overcrowded! The current state of the economy is very unfavourable and causes a surge in the abandonment rate - people are sacrificing their animals to try and cut some of their expenses…
With new dogs left at my doors daily and no adoptions, it’s particularly hard for me to financially cope and feed so many mouths! I haven’t had any donations and can’t buy kibble anymore… Now, I only have enough food for 3 days, maximum. Besides, I’m not talking about kibble, but rice…
I’m so depressed, my frail dogs aren’t eating proper food, nor enough of it because I have to ration - I’ve never experienced such hard times at the shelter before! I feel terribly helpless, I’m responsible for my dogs’ well-being and now, their lives really depend on this kibble campaign’s success!”
"I’ve been compensating for my inability to buy kibble by cooking some small portions of rice to feed the dogs… But they’re hungry, they’re still carnivores so it’s too poorly nourishing for them, unfortunately. Additionally, the effects of the lack of kibble start to show: their fur isn’t good-looking, they’re weaker, exhausted and more nervous! I’m very concerned about their health and there’s always a risk that hunger makes them fight each other!
The kibble issue also dramatically limits my ability to rescue vulnerable street dogs. I can barely feed my shelter’s dogs with rationed rice portions, so I definitely can’t feed or take care of others properly. When I take a dog in, I commit to providing them with all they need - but I don’t have the resources to do so at the moment, it’s heart-wrenching knowing I aim at helping dogs in distress… If this campaign fails, it will be a tragedy for so many dogs!”
“I rescued Pia from the streets a month ago: she’s a two-year-old who got beaten so badly she could no longer walk or see anything for a while… Her head was severely wounded, she was in a terrible condition when I found her.
She’s recovering slowly from both her heavy physical and psychological traumas… She absolutely needs this delivery to fully recover, she’s still particularly fragile and without kibble, her state can regress very rapidly!”
“I strive to save and care for dogs on my own personal resources. My family helps me as well but it was definitely more manageable in the past: there were way less dogs under my care and the economy was quite healthier… Covering all the shelter-related expenses in such a context has become impossible without help… Even by dedicating money to vital expenses for the dogs, such as vet care or kibble supply, I can’t cope and get into more debts…
I struggle so hard with inflation and the saddest part is the absence of donations; I reached out to organisations to ask for help, but they can’t help me, as everyone’s in a tough situation - kibble supply is always the main difficulty for shelters and it’s indisputably mine as well… Without this Animal Webaction campaign, I won’t be able to take care of and feed my dogs the way they need!”
"This shelter is part of my family history, just like my love for animals - it’s as if it were genetically inherited! I give my soul into saving and helping these dogs because here, locally and even nationally, there aren’t many animal lovers… It’s very rewarding to give these dogs another chance at life!
I don’t have volunteers at the shelter. I only have two employees and my family to help me take care of my dogs… I’ve been trying to change people’s minds towards dogs for 15 years, in my village. I know some things have paid off; there’s more systematic sterilisation, respect and compassion…
But I also know people are financially limited in their actions in favour of dogs, lately. While others prefer to abandon their dogs or not to adopt for similar economic reasons… I feel responsible for the dogs in my area but it’s hard to make a difference alone, without means and more involvement!”
