Animal Webaction visited the site 02 December 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"I take care of 85 stray dogs in the Black Sea/Danube surroundings. Their number is rather constant, but the sad truth is there are new abandoned dogs each month, and just as many stray dogs who die from various causes… They’re left to their own devices, in danger, without protection nor regular meals...
Currently, my biggest challenge is providing enough food for the dogs. Winter is here and I struggle getting kibble to keep them nourished in this harsh climate! I’m sadly forced to feed them mostly with bread, way too occasionally with kibble. I’m on unpaid leave, so I cannot buy any myself…
Now, I have no supply left and the situation keeps getting worse: inflation continues to rise and donations vanish! To survive outside, the dogs need to eat more than what I’m currently able to provide them… It breaks my heart to see them suffer, this kibble campaign has to succeed!”
"Stray dogs are vulnerable, living in terrible conditions; they really need something better than bread to make it through! Sadly, I’ve had to cut back on it, while the lack of kibble has consequences: weight loss, aggressiveness, wandering further in the neighbourhoods in search of food...
Many end up sick, hit by cars or are victims of acts of cruelty… I see firsthand the struggles they face, yet most local people often ignore these dogs’ plight, they even contribute to the problem by abandoning their own pets… Meanwhile, the local pound is an overcrowded, dreadful place for dogs…
I cannot just passively witness the hate, abuse and violence! I’ll always do all I can to protect my dogs… I’m the only person taking care of them in this area and losing any of them due to my inability to provide kibble will take a toll on my mental health! If this campaign fails, many will perish in cruel ways!”
"I found Sherlock about 6 months ago, near a construction site... He's 9 years old and he was abandoned with a rope tied around his neck, literally embedded in his flesh! I rushed him to the vet's office to get his wounds treated. Although his neck has healed, Sherlock's life is not easy: he's old and blind...
I have to look after him when he eats, to make sure other dogs don't steal his food! He's very scared and shy due to his blindness, and he's unable to search for food on his own. He really depends on me for survival, so it's crucial that I provide him with kibble."
"I’ve always relied on my personal income and the donations from kind people to fund my actions to help these dogs… I have no other means to provide them with what they need. Right now, I'm on unpaid leave and barely have enough for my own needs, so it's even harder for me to get kibble... The labour market hasn’t recovered yet in Romania and with the current economic context, it’s difficult for everyone to afford things like kibble.
Donations are almost nonexistent: many people here are focused on helping Ukrainian refugees and can’t afford to also support strays. I receive some help from time to time, but not nearly enough to cover the needs of 85 dogs… I'm feeling very disheartened right now, I have debts and I live under huge pressure - I struggle to keep my head above the water! I try my best to help and feed the strays, but my resources are just not enough... I'm out of options, I need this campaign to change these unlucky dogs’ fate!"
"I've been helping stray dogs for 6 years now… Seeing them greeting me with wagging tails each morning fills my heart with joy! I feel very proud to have been able to keep these dogs alive and find homes for hundreds of them… When I find a new abandoned dog, I do my best to have them sterilised as soon as possible to prevent overpopulation… But, my resources are limited and I need more help in order to make a difference in the area!
I've reached out to people many times to get help with the feeding rounds, but it wasn’t successful… It's a lot of work and not many people are willing to wake up at 6 AM every day and drive outside the city, no matter the weather… Still, I'm so glad I passed down my love for animals to my daughter, who's studying to become a veterinarian! Caring for these dogs is the most rewarding thing in the world to me; and helping me get kibble is one of the best things people who care can do for these dogs!”
Animal Webaction has a logistics centre in Romania, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
“An association from Bucharest helps me with sterilisation when they organise free campaigns… I also have two close friends in Britain who support my actions the best they can on occasions, sponsoring me with medicines and kibble. I try to reach out to other organisations to get help, but it's very complicated, especially as all the organisations I know are overwhelmed with requests!
Regarding adoptions, they were deeply impacted by the British ban - even though it's been recently lifted, rules are stricter now, so it’s almost impossible to send dogs to their new homes in Britain without facing some issues at the border… I fear that nothing good will happen for abandoned dogs if nothing changes at both legislation and societal levels; I cannot change people’s attitudes towards dogs, so the best I can do is to keep on taking care of them… All help is precious to make this campaign a success!”
