Animal Webaction visited the site 20 December 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"My association takes care of more than 400 street dogs, in several places in the city... More and more of them end up being abandoned! These dogs have a hard life, with viruses, contagious diseases and, above all, starvation... They are desperately trying to survive and their health is undermined by these living conditions and malnutrition!
On top of that, they are frequently victims of violence and harassment... The population does not have a good attitude towards stray dogs. Some people are even so malicious towards them that they poison them or run over them with their cars! This makes me very sad...
The association allows me to protect them from mistreatment and deprivation, but without resources it is very hard: the dogs only eat a tiny amount of kibble once a day, from a donation received a while ago... In two days, there will be none left! I would be torn if the campaign fails, I would constantly think of those stray dogs I would have let die of hunger..."
"Sergio is a 3 year old male whose condition is painful to see: he is very thin and on top of that, he has severe and extensive scabies. He is at such a stage of the disease that his skin is becoming over-infected; the risk of leishmaniasis is real if he does not receive the necessary treatment. The lack of kibble puts him in particular danger!
Unfortunately, the shelter is overcrowded, Sergio is far too contagious and for the moment, I can only give him basic care, as I cannot afford to have him checked... He is very fragile and lacks the strength to fight against the disease. Without this kibble delivery, his survival is very uncertain, as proper nutrition is crucial to recover from this disease..."
"I have 35 dogs in my care at the shelter and it is now saturated! The association is overwhelmed by new arrivals of abandoned dogs: some are abandoned for health reasons that are too expensive to manage, others simply for "comfort", before the holidays... These dogs often arrive in very poor condition!
I have fewer and fewer donations and means to continue to care for these dogs and I fear the lack of kibble will further damage their already fragile health. I have to dip into the last few remaining stocks of an old kibble donation to feed them, by rationing...
They are clearly not eating enough and I am very worried! They get sick easily, being already very sensitive to infections... Most of them even display a very aggressive and dominant behaviour, it's dangerous! I am really afraid for my most vulnerable dogs, they are not going to survive for long with the lack of kibble..."
"Slougui is a 3 year old greyhound who has definitely been exploited for racing. He ended up being thrown out on the street as soon as his legs, deformed by the relentless practice of racing, were too painful... He arrived in an appalling state! Scrawny, gaunt and very fearful...
He is fed twice a day, but remains extremely thin and I fear that the kibble issue has a lot to do with it... He has recently developed a (probably tumorous) lesion on his belly - it is urgent for him to be examined by the vet! Slougui is really counting on this campaign to gain weight and strength: his life is at stake!"
"It is impossible for me to buy food to feed all the dogs at the shelter and in the streets because I don't have enough money! Donations are becoming very scarce and even our regular donors can no longer help us, given the extent of the economic crisis... Without money, it is impossible to care for and feed the dogs!
Debt has become the main means of financing the association to keep going, but it's a real downward spiral! I have accumulated astronomical debts with the vet, who no longer accepts to treat the dogs without having been paid beforehand. I can't cope any more!
Many other expenses are essential for the rescue and survival of the dogs: guardians' salaries, costs related to our transport vehicle (which often breaks down)... and I have to pay everything out of my own pocket! It is a real crisis situation that the shelter is experiencing and in that, the failure of this campaign would be yet another tragedy for us and the dogs..."
"I have been involved in animal protection for over 15 years and my association was created in 2014. Thanks to media coverage and legal battles that we won, we managed to put an end to the mass slaughters of dogs and cats in my region! Some municipalities have even adopted TNVR (capture/neuter/vaccinate/release strays)... Our efforts are not in vain, but there is still a long way to go to change people's attitudes and for them to show more respect towards animals!
My serious health concerns have greatly affected the association... Despite this, I continue to manage the administration, respond to distress calls received on social networks, take care of the shelter's animals and take them to the vet... I have four employees who handle all the management of the feeding rounds, but the number of volunteers involved varies frequently... With too little funding, too little help and limited manpower, it's a struggle to keep up with these actions towards the dogs!"
