Animal Webaction visited the site 17 December 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The number of dogs in my care keeps increasing, as I’m the only one around trying to save as many of them from the local pound as possible… But the shelter is too crowded for me to take any more dogs in at the moment. Besides, I barely have enough resources to keep up!
The cost of food has also increased a lot due to inflation, making the lack of kibble my main issue... Winter is here and the dogs need more energy to survive these freezing temperatures! But now, I only have enough kibble to feed them (with rationed portions) for a few more days...
I try to get help but, lately, donations have got increasingly scarce! I can't cover all the expenses by myself and at this rate, I can’t help any other dog as I can’t feed them! This kibble issue keeps me up at night and this campaign is the last solution I have to provide every dog in my care with kibble…"
“I currently feed my dogs small amounts of cheap kibble… The thing is it doesn’t provide enough nutrients and also has consequences on their health: weight loss, skin diseases, digestive problems… I have concerns because they definitely need more calories, proteins and vitamins to survive the cold weather! In addition to my shelters’ dogs, I also try my best to feed more than 50 strays in the area: winter makes their dire existence even worse!
I feel so bad for the dogs living in the streets, as they have no shelter or enough to eat. Here, people are hunting and killing them… While the authorities and administrative pounds, instead of providing assistance, are actively participating in the killing! There is even a legislation that bans people from feeding dogs on the streets… It’s heartbreaking to see so many dogs suffer and I want to do more for them, but I can’t without more resources and support! This kibble campaign has to succeed!”
“Natarau is an ageing dog who has been living at my shelter for a few years. I rescued him from the streets just as he was about to get caught by the dogcatchers and taken to the pound... Natarau was actually injured in the process, because the dogcatchers shot him right in the eye when they tried to tranquilize him... Surprisingly, despite this traumatic experience with humans, he’s a very friendly dog!
Unfortunately, it is clear that the current kibble situation at the shelter has impacted his health… He has developed a very painful gum infection and it's particularly crucial that Natarau gets good amounts of quality food, as he needs all the nutrients and vitamins necessary to help him recover. Without this kibble delivery, the infection can spread and it will have dramatic consequences on Natarau's health!”
“Because of the inflation, I can barely buy half as much kibble as I could before the economy plunged… At first, I didn't have as many dogs and kibble were cheaper. But with skyrocketing prices, an increasing number of dogs in my care and no help in sight, it’s impossible to cope, at this stage! I mostly just rely on my income only to ensure the survival of my dogs, but it’s harder each day since everything gets more and more expensive…
I have unpaid bills as I prioritise my dogs’ most vital and basic needs. I get less and less donations; people are more concerned about their own lives and uncertain future. Most don't realise that shelters like mine are struggling. They must think we have the situation under control and get help from many sponsors, but it’s very far from the reality: it’s all on me! And if this campaign succeeds, I could focus on other major aspects, like the dogs’ health and well-being as well as rescuing other dogs…”
“I started my animal protection journey by rescuing two dogs from a local park… From there, I began saving countless more from the local pound, where only death awaited them. My goal was to make a difference in these dogs’ lives and save as many as possible from tragic fates, getting them adopted in loving homes - they just deserve better lives! The only person who helps me is my girlfriend, and we take care of more than 200 dogs between my 2 shelters and outside… But I have no volunteers and no employees.
It’s hard to ensure that all the dogs’ needs are met - playtime, food, clean cages… Between my job and my responsibilities towards dogs, I barely have any free time! I wish I had more help, but can't seem to find any; I lack local support and the authorities only want to get rid of all the dogs! They keep putting obstacles in my way and it makes my job even harder… Without more support, I can’t make a real difference, nor continue providing for my shelters' dogs and advocating for those at the pound and the strays…”

“I'm lucky to have some regular help from a Belgian organisation. They send a few kibble bags and have also helped me with some adoptions this year… But sadly, despite these efforts, it remains insufficient to fix the kibble issue at the shelter!
I've tried promoting the shelters on Facebook groups and reaching out to other organisations for help, but it seems like no one is interested in offering any kind of support... It's disheartening, because it feels like dog shelters just aren't a priority for anyone!
I am trying to fund my rescue through online campaigns on Facebook and by searching for donations or any other form of help… It’s a constant struggle to keep the shelters running! My only wish is to have enough kibble to keep the dogs well-fed and healthy… These loving little souls deserve all the help!”
