Animal Webaction visited the site 31 December 2022 and confirms the situation described below.
"The shelter is relatively small for nearly 170 dogs and the conditions here are fairly basic; but the biggest problem I am facing is definitely the supply of dog food! Inflation in Morocco has greatly affected prices, particularly those of pet food. The aid I receive is also decreasing month by month, in fact, I have not received any in-kind donations or sponsorships last month...
I have accumulated several months of debt with the veterinarian, the pharmacy, and kibble suppliers... These latter ones even refuse to give me any new credit because my debts are too high... It has been two weeks that I am forced to reduce the dogs' portions! I feel desperate, frustrated, and emotionally drained... My dogs are my absolute priority, I constantly think about them and I come to the shelter every day. I cannot arrive empty-handed and have a clear conscience! This campaign must succeed. It is the only solution for my dogs to eat their fill, and even eat at all."
"The population of the shelter has increased in recent weeks: I have rescued several dogs in a pitiful state, and unfortunately, as is often the case, several dogs have also been abandoned directly in front of my doors. While my shelter is not perfect, it at least offers the dogs within it protection from the rain, cold, and dangers of the streets such as accidents and abuse.
Unfortunately, due to the imminent kibble shortage at the shelter, I am currently unable to rescue any more dogs in need. This breaks my heart, as I am the only shelter in Tetouan! The street dogs literally have no one else to rely on.
And as for the dogs already under my responsibility at the shelter, I cannot keep them confined without food either. The failure of this campaign terrifies me as it would inflict a double punishment on us. It would inevitably condemn the shelter dogs to a deterioration in their health and living conditions, and the street dogs, to certain death..."
"Dodo is a 7-year-old male, I brought him to the shelter around 2 weeks ago now. He was hit by a car, he has a spinal fracture and his back legs are very damaged. In fact, he is completely paralyzed in his lower limbs because of the accident. He can’t move, feed or fetch for food himself... he relies entirely on me to survive! And besides his mobility problem, Dodo is also very skinny and has skin issues. Without nutritive food in sufficient amounts, his path to recovery will be impossible! It's essential that I have a steady kibble supply to ensure his life isn't in danger, and only this campaign can help me provide it."
"I used to fund the shelter primarily from the donations, but I think because of the crisis, people can’t help as they used to… My donations have slowed significantly and it has become increasingly difficult to keep the shelter running and provide for the animals in my care.
Adoptions have also slowed down, I have had no new adoptions since the summer. I have many animals under my care and a debt to the veterinary office that only keeps growing… I can't do regular operations or visits for the dogs because I can't pay back what I owe and I can't pay for medical care on the spot either... I have to prioritize buying kibble above all else, but I am already so in debt with my supplier that he won't give me any more. It's a vicious cycle...
The financial difficulties of the association and the demands of running the shelter are taking a toll on my mental and physical health. I am constantly stressed, I lose sleep because I always worry about not being able to provide for my dogs... But in order to continue taking care of my dogs, I need to be healthy, and I also need support... Only this campaign can help my dogs and allow me to catch my breath for a while"
"Since the shelter opened three years ago, I have seen a small shift in the way people in my community think about animal care. I see more people taking an interest in the well-being of animals, especially through our Facebook group. However, there is still a long way to go. Mentalities take time to change and here, animal protection is generally not a priority for anyone.
Finding funding or reliable staff to take care of animals is also not easy. Taking care of dogs is particularly difficult, especially when they are disabled, and I have many in my care! It takes a lot of time and energy to feed, clean, care for them, take care of them...
Despite all the difficulties, this is my life, I chose it and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world. To have succeeded in saving so many abandoned, neglected or mistreated dogs and cats, some of which are now in loving homes, surpasses everything else!"
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble throughout the country.
"I am always trying to find ways to get help, posting on social media to alert people about our difficulties, reaching out to foreign organizations... I am always hoping that people will see our cause and want to help us, but unfortunately, donations are very rare... There are many animal protection organizations in need, it is very difficult to raise awareness about our specific actions and convince people to help us! I can only truly rely on Animal Webaction for kibble assistance. Without your help, the very survival of my shelter and my dogs is heavily questioned..."
