Animal Webaction visited the site 07 January 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"Everything has become so expensive in the last few months... We are finding it very difficult to provide kibble for the street dogs! We have had to reduce our feeding rounds for some time now, , and we're now at the point where we have no kibble left for them at all... Even if the dogs sometimes find food in the rubbish, it is not suitable for them!
And when the dogs are hungry, they venture out of their territory in search of food. This is a very dangerous situation, because if they are a nuisance to the population, they risk being caught and shot by the authorities... This is a terrifying prospect, but unfortunately a very real one!
Life for street dogs is far from easy; their only respite is when they see our van! Our feeding rounds create a virtuous circle: they allow us to contain the dogs on the same territory, reducing the risk of accidents, facilitating cohabitation with the population and, by the same token, our care and vaccination actions. But without kibble, we cannot protect the strays of Tangier!"
"The number of dogs at the sanctuary has increased in recent times as we have taken in several street dogs in a poor condition. The problem is that due to inflation and low donations, we can't provide the amount of kibble the dogs really need!
We have been cutting back on portions for some time now and our remaining stock will not last more than a week. Many of our dogs have lost weight, their coats are not shiny, they are not doing well! Their immune system is weak and they catch diseases... We have recently lost 2 dogs to pneumonia and 4 are currently affected by kennel cough, hanging on for dear life.
I am really worried, it makes me sick to know my babies are hungry and getting sick! We really need to get kibble to prevent their health deteriorating further... Our dogs should have a peaceful sanctuary life, and a sanctuary life means that you don't go hungry..."
"Van Gogh is an 8-year-old male. When we rescued him, he was burnt, had wounds all over his body and his ears were cut with a knife, that’s why we named him Van Gogh... He was severely abused, mutilated, and deeply hurt. You may think that 8 is not old for a dog, but when you’ve been so abused, it’s a very long time!
He’s certainly doing better now than when we found him, his burns have healed and the scars have formed, but he’s still in a very vulnerable state and the lack of kibble at the sanctuary only makes things worse! Van Gogh is losing weight, he's skinny, and he’s getting old. He needs to eat his fill otherwise his health will decline very quickly..."
"The ongoing economic crisis is affecting the whole world, so as a charity that depends entirely on donations from the public, we are also feeling the impact! We felt a slight respite in December with an upturn in donations and because of this we were able to cover some of our debts. However, it is now January and, as we all know, after Christmas people really struggle... We feel like we are back to square one and I am very worried.
We still have huge debts to pay to the vet and our small donations don't allow us to buy enough food for all the dogs... We have also had flooding due to heavy rains at the sanctuary and we have to do some repairs. There is a myriad of problems and the lack of money makes things really difficult!
Anyway, our priority at the moment is to feed our dogs and for that we turn to you... The success of this campaign would be a huge help as it would allow us to feed the strays and would mean that the dogs at the sanctuary will be able to eat their fill, and hopefully gain weight again!"
"Our association provides a sanctuary for animals in need and also runs the Hayat project, which focuses on the vaccination and sterilisation of stray dogs. We aim to make Tangier the first rabies-free and animal-friendly city in Africa! We also educate the community, care for and feed animals belonging to poor families. We help the street guardians who in turn help the strays, so in that sense we have achieved a lot!
I am delighted to see that the community is protecting animals more and more every day. I don't see children picking on dogs anymore, which used to be something you saw all the time... Now when I see dogs lying outside schools, nobody bothers them and the children even look after them! It warms my heart and makes me smile.
I have to say that at first the community looked at me as if I was crazy for getting involved in this cause! But now people ask to take pictures with me, thank me and congratulate me for the work I do... All these positive things make me even more determined to continue, because despite everything, there is still so much to do! We have achieved so much and yet we have not done anything yet..."
Animal Webaction has a logistics center in Morocco, which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"We receive daily calls from people asking us to come to their neighbourhoods to sterilise dogs but unfortunately our veterinary debts are so high that we cannot continue for the moment. We have to ask people to raise the money for sterilisation themselves...The Brigitte Bardot Foundation has been helping to sterilise female dogs in the city of Tangier for the last 5 years but we don't know if we will get the help this year. There are so many other charities that need help!
I am constantly thinking: what can I do to raise donations and make my actions more visible? I am constantly knocking on doors, because it is donations that allow us to continue our work, to keep our babies fed, cared for and safe. Please, please, everyone who sees this campaign, help us make it a success! It would be a great help to our hungry babies..."
