Animal Webaction visited the site 18 January 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"Currently, the association takes care of 155 dogs... The situation at the shelter is difficult this winter and recently, we have had dogs who have died of old age or because of the cold... Alongside these sad events, more and more dogs are being abandoned at the shelter, sometimes even thrown over our walls!
Owners do not take care of their dogs and abandon them when they get sick. Managing the shelter has become very complicated with so many, often fragile and medically distressed dogs! We have to ration their food in order to feed them all...
The stock of cheap kibble that I had built up a few months ago has been used up very quickly! Now it's a matter of days before a total shortage of kibble at the shelter... We are suffering from the high inflation that affects all expense items... I am very sad and afraid for our dogs, because I can't buy any more kibble!"
"At the moment, the dogs are eating the cheapest kibble on the market in small quantities, mixed with old bread. I am really worried about their health because many have lost weight and others have unfortunately not survived the drop in temperature... It must be said that the location of the shelter is particularly windy and with the rainy weather, it is very hard to keep the dogs warm... The weaker ones are already very vulnerable and they don't eat enough, nor well enough to face the winter conditions!
Many of these dogs come from the street, they have come a long way and this makes the situation all the more worrying when you know the disastrous living conditions of dogs outside. They are neglected, mistreated and suffer from temperature variations, diseases and hunger... It is inhumane to let all these dogs suffer and I would be upset to see them starving and not be able to do anything for them because of the lack of kibble at the shelter... In this, this campaign is crucial, many canine lives depend on it!"
"Léa arrived at the shelter two months ago... This very loving and sociable two-year-old dog had been wandering around outside for many months and her condition was appalling; she had extensive purulent scabies, in an advanced stage. She was very thin and although her condition is slowly improving with treatment, she is still very fragile, her fate remains uncertain! Her immune system is very weakened and without sufficient kibble, her condition cannot improve. The risks of relapse are great and her complete recovery depends on the success of this campaign!"
"With inflation, the shelter's finances have been put to the test... Our actions are mainly financed by my husband. Now our cash flow is almost empty and even if we get a grant, it won't arrive for another 3 months and will only be used to pay the debts we owe to the vet as part of our dispensary's work...
We are so short of funds that we had to stop sterilising dogs belonging to poor people who come to our dispensary... All the care and operations necessary for the survival of our dogs are paid on credit, while the kibble supplier no longer accepts deferred payment...
Fundraisers are no longer working and donations get fewer and fewer; donors are being asked from everywhere... They cannot help all the associations in need! The lack of resources does not affect my motivation, but without more support, I fear that the shelter's situation and the dogs' will get worse... We won't be able to continue to help and feed them, we won't be able to take action in their favour anymore!"
"For over 25 years I have been involved in animal protection. The association's actions have allowed us to save thousands of dogs in distress and to provide thousands of treatments for the dogs of people in need, thanks to our dispensary... Our greatest pride is to see more and more poor people coming to the dispensary by themselves, every week, to have their dogs treated at our place! This is only possible thanks to the state subsidy we receive for this purpose.
Unfortunately, we can no longer afford to provide them with free sterilisation of their animals, as it has become too difficult to cover these expenses... It is important that we have support because our actions are essential to prevent the spread of diseases between animals and to limit their proliferation through sterilisation! We wish we could do more and take more dogs in distress in, but we lack the space, food and resources to do so... Thank you to everyone who will help us feed our dogs!"
