Animal Webaction visited the site 22 January 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"Currently, our biggest and most pressing difficulty is definitely the lack of kibble. Inflation is a huge problem for us. Everything has become too expensive, from kibble to veterinary services and generally everything we need for the shelter. My priority is always to provide food for the dogs, but the prices have literally doubled...
I am forced to buy low quality kibble, I give them what I can, according to my means. And I also had to reduce the quantities, I have no other choice! The dogs don't eat enough... and my small remaining stock will barely last a few more days. This campaign must succeed! It is the only way to provide high quality kibble in sufficient quantities to my dogs. Words fail me to express what this help would mean to my dogs, especially in the dead of winter... "
"The lack of kibble is already having visible consequences at the shelter: my dogs bark a lot more, they are really nervous. This situation makes me anxious! I have a lot of sick dogs, old dogs, and puppies too. I am especially worried about them...
Of course, my dogs are much better off here than if they were on the streets. Nobody mistreats them here, and the shelter offers them incomparably better living conditions. I give them a lot of attention and love, but unfortunately, this is not enough... The basic condition to ensure their survival is to be able to feed them enough, and properly!
If this campaign fails, the consequences will be, to say the least, terrible... It would have a disastrous effect on the dogs in the shelter, and I wouldn't be able to help the street dogs either, as more and more of them are abandoned every day. They wouldn't even have a chance at a better life... I am afraid and live in hell at the thought that this campaign could fail. The meaning of my life is to help all these dogs, but without this campaign, I wouldn't even be able to provide for their most vital need..."
"When we found Bobi, his back legs had been completely cut off, and embedded in concrete... What happened to him is simply horrible! Under our protection, Bobi is safe from such events, he will never be mistreated again. But that doesn't mean that he is out of the woods.
Bobi is an old dog with a fragile health, he has problems of sight, skin and hearing... He is one of the most vulnerable dogs in my care because of his many health problems and now also because of his advanced age. He can't take care of himself, he is completely dependent on us, and the kibble we can provide him to survive!"
"Recently, we received a donation of 30 Styrofoam insulated dog houses, which provide warm shelter for our dogs during the winter. We are very grateful for this! But unfortunately, the question of kibble remains unchanged. Obtaining kibble is our biggest challenge, followed closely by the lack of funds for the treatment of sick dogs.
I have a substantial debt to the vet for vaccinations, booster shots, exams, parasite cleanup, etc. I try to pay back a little bit of the money I have been paying for the treatment. I try to pay back a little each month, but it's hard because the need for vet care is constant. So is our need for kibble....
I feel overwhelmed and sad as I struggle to maintain the shelter and care for the dogs in my care. In the past, the number of dogs was smaller, the costs were lower... Today, the prices are out of reach, the donations are too low and the adoptions are much less. I have the largest shelter in the region, and still no support from the state... It's simple, this campaign is the only help I can dream of for kibble!"
"Growing up in a working class family, I found comfort in caring for animals. As a little girl, I would gather stray dogs and cats around me, using my love for them as a source of comfort and joy. Eventually, someone reported my actions to the authorities and I was told that I had to open a shelter if I wanted to continue caring for so many animals. And so I did.
But it's not just about opening a shelter, it's about changing people's attitudes towards animals. People have to understand that if they don't love animals, they can't really love people either... It's not just about providing food and shelter, it's about love and compassion. And for those who still don't love animals, they should at least not abuse them! It breaks my heart to see animals mistreated and abused, and I will always stand up for their rights and welfare."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform directly in Serbia, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble.
"I try to post as much as possible on my Facebook page: pictures of my rescues, specific dogs needing medical attention etc. I do this so that people can understand what is going on at the shelter and the things we need, but unfortunately the help I get is not enough. Most of the time people share my posts, comment, maybe sympathize, but I rarely get any concrete help.
The situation was better before, when the number of dogs was lower and inflation was not such a big problem. But the pandemic has made things even more difficult, as people are now struggling to make ends meet and can no longer donate money to care for the animals.
Unfortunately, I don't have any partnerships or collaborations with other organizations either, which makes it even more difficult to improve the living conditions of my dogs. I do not see any way in the near future to improve the conditions of kibble supply.... This campaign is our only lifeline!"
