Animal Webaction visited the site 12 February 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"The number of abandoned dogs has increased a lot lately. Many people have left Morocco and left their dogs behind... And we are the ones who end up taking care of them! With the increase in prices, people are already struggling to ensure their own survival, so let's not even mention that of their animals ...
The inflation and the increasing number of dogs give us even more responsibilities, work and of course expenses... Before the crisis, we already struggled to provide for our dogs but now with these exaggerated prices, it has become almost impossible to buy kibble. The quantities that we manage to gather are far from being enough for our 168 dogs...
We have 40 kilos of kibble left at the moment, go figure... We try to compensate by giving the dogs carcasses, leftovers and hard bread. But it is not enough, nor suitable! We live from day to day and so do our dogs. The situation is critical and to make matters worse, we are in winter, the dogs need good food to survive, especially the sick dogs and the babies... There is nothing worse than this feeling of helplessness that I feel in front of so many lives in danger..."
"Our shelter has many recently rescued dogs in absolutely terrible conditions. Some are paralyzed, some are severely thin and sick, some are all three... The lack of kibble is bad for all the dogs in the shelter, but it is even worse for them!
And the problem is that there are still many dogs in the streets who need help. Their situation is catastrophic, they are thin and sick, and the pound is always trying to catch them. The animal misery is increasing, the requests for help are increasing and it is becoming more and more difficult for me to manage everything. I am completely overwhelmed and I am tired physically, mentally and financially...
I really need this campaign to ensure the survival of all these dogs... If it doesn't succeed, the dogs in the shelter will suffer a lot and the street dogs won't have any chance to be saved either. It's a matter of life and death for all of them!"
"Yara is a young dog who was dropped off in front of the shelter... She suffered from Leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease that can be fatal. Fortunately, she survived thanks to the treatment but she has a lot of difficulty to recover completely, she remains too thin and weak... Given her condition, it is crucial to provide her with adequate food! Any prolonged risk of malnutrition could result in her death..."
"Before the crisis, I had more donations and I also had several constant jobs that helped me fund the shelter but now I have neither... And then all over the world, people are struggling to meet their needs and those of their families so they prefer not to donate for animals. I can't really blame them!
On the other hand, with the multitude of difficulties we face, the loss of donations, my job, inflation... Honestly, our situation is worse than impossible! I have bills piled up at the vets, kibble suppliers, pharmacy, rent.... Absolutely everything. I have no choice but to go into debt to keep my dogs and my shelter alive...but this situation can't last forever. People's patience has limits...
I live in stress 24 hours a day and I get up every day with a ball in my stomach, with fear and the same question: what if I can't find enough to feed my animals? Anxiety, fear, stress have become my friends, we live together all the time... This campaign is my only hope, as I unfortunately no longer have the resources to buy kibble..."
"When I created my association, I dreamed of saving all the animals in the street, finding homes for them, sterilizing as many as possible, vaccinating every last dog, raising awareness and integrating animal education into the school curriculum so that people and animals could live in harmony.
I know that the actions of my association have contributed and still contribute to reducing animal misery and the transmission of diseases such as rabies, still very present in Morocco. But unfortunately there is still so much to do... Seeing so many unhappy, sick and mistreated animals in the street on a daily basis, and seeing that society does not help, but on the contrary tries to put obstacles in our way, is really difficult... not to mention the expenses that it requires!
Anyway, my vision of things will remain unchanged: I really think that we are on this earth to help the weakest and to be the voice of those who have none! Today, with the shelter, 300 souls, dogs and cats together, will no longer suffer the mistreatment and dangers of the street - that makes me very proud! And despite all the difficulties that having an animal shelter entails, being surrounded by my protégés makes me forget everything and gives me the strength to continue fighting, for them."
Animal Webaction has a logistics platform in Morocco, which enables us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble everywhere in the country.
"We are constantly being asked for rescues, in fact our community has been warned that we have to take a break for the moment due to lack of sufficient donations. But sometimes it is very difficult to say no, especially in the states where these poor animals are found....
But unfortunately, even when people promise to take care of the expenses, these promises are often empty... We find ourselves with a lot of sick animals, which increases a lot our veterinary expenses, or rather, our bills... All put together, between veterinary care, kibbles, maintenance expenses of the shelter rent etc, it is very very difficult to provide for the needs of 300 animals, especially since the adoptions are also very low...
Unfortunately, we have no collaboration that could allow us to improve our situation or to adopt more of our protégés, and I have no income of my own either. At this stage, all my hopes are based on the help that comes or will come from abroad because at the moment in Morocco, it is unfortunately a lost cause..."
