Animal Webaction visited the site 28 February 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“Currently, I take care of 169 dogs in the shelter and it’s a lot of dogs to care for… With each additional dog, more costs and responsibilities come: treating and feeding them, finding enough space for them, evaluating their behaviour, ensuring their safety... The current situation at the shelter is concerning for me at many different levels, but the greatest and most urgent difficulty is that I’m running out of kibble for the dogs… It’s a constant struggle to feed all of them!
I try to provide for the dogs by myself but I’ve reached the limits of my means… It has been difficult to balance all my expenses, especially with the increase in prices due to inflation and the donations that have drastically decreased… I’m forced to cut on their portions to try and stretch my remaining kibble bags but, in any case, I won’t have any more left in a week from now! This kibble issue affects me mentally, I feel so bad; I really care about my dogs and this campaign’s success will be such a relief - it’s my last chance not to let them starve!”
“It's been more than two weeks since I ran out of the kibble supply from the last Animal Webaction campaign… I’ve been indebting myself to buy a few bags to ensure that my dogs get something to eat. But at this rate, they will be depleted very soon and I’m unable to buy more on credit...
As I’ll soon be out of solutions to keep my dogs safe and fed, this kibble issue is also preventing me from rescuing any more endangered dogs… The shelter's too crowded, which doesn’t help, but there are still dogs out there who require attention! Alas, I cannot offer them shelter and food… It’s so disheartening when I think about the strays’ critical living conditions in my area.
Being unable to help all of them deeply saddens me. I’m scared the authorities would slaughter them, like they did not so long ago… Awful methods like shooting or poisoning the strays are still common practices, sadly. I keep worrying: to think that I’ll have to release my shelter’s dogs back to the streets if I can’t find kibble is inconceivable to me!”
“When I found Moreno two months ago, he was severely wounded and unable to move… His condition was critical, he was in such a vulnerable state! I was informed that he had been in a car accident which caused his injuries… I decided to take him to the shelter so I could provide him with first aid.
He is a kind and gentle dog and I can finally see the first signs of the healing process on his wounds… But he remains too fragile and given his condition, he would have never survived on his own on the streets! To fully recover, he still needs proper care, a shelter but also, quality food like kibble to get enough nutrients to build up his strength and heal.”
“When I started my shelter, things were easier as I had fewer dogs to care for... But once the number of dogs started to increase more and more, things got more difficult. I began asking for help but then, the situation became even more challenging with the pandemic and the ensuing economic crisis…
To manage so many dogs, two workers help me at the shelter, but it also means I have to pay their salaries! I also pay rent for the shelter's location and I still owe money to the pharmacy, kibble suppliers and pet shops; the situation is tough, I have to make difficult choices regarding the treatments to prioritise… Besides, I can no longer buy kibble, as I need to pay back the many debts I already have!
It's been challenging to get donations lately, and the support I receive is limited. Apart from Animal Webaction, I have no other partnerships or sponsors to help me with kibble… That’s why this campaign’s success is crucial: I could focus on other essential expenses; it would take a lot of stress off me, and help me provide the dogs with better care!”
“I’ve always been fond of animals, from a young age. My grandfather was the one who inspired my love for animals… This passion only grew as I got older, and I always wanted to help them in any way I could! Unfortunately, there was no animal shelter in my city, which is why I established the very first shelter to help dogs, along with the first animal association in the city. This was a significant achievement and had a positive impact on the animal population here!
Running a shelter is not easy, and it’s hard for me when I cannot rescue more dogs because I lack both the resources to provide for them and the necessary space. Being unable to afford taking care of all the dogs is always at the back of my mind, I worry about how long I can continue to support them all by myself... Still, my love for animals and the need to protect them are my main motivation: seeing the dogs safe in the shelter is what gives me the most satisfaction! That’s why I deeply value these Animal Webaction campaigns; they’ve helped me keep my dogs alive and fed, so far…”
Animal Webaction has a logistic platform in Morocco which allows us to intervene quickly and deliver kibble throughout the country.
“People used to help more often and donate more, but now, it's not as stable… The donations I receive are very limited and only from a very few people. I may post on social media to call for help, but support has significantly declined, along with the economy!
Adoptions have also been impacted and decreased a lot due to financial reasons: many people can’t afford pet ownership, whereas my association cannot afford all the expenses for a dog to go abroad, which has refrained many foreigners from adopting…
I've reached out to countless organisations for any type of support, but sadly, none of them came to our aid except from Animal Webaction… At the end of the day, it's not about me but the dogs that we're all helping! So I’ll be so grateful for any help I can get to provide kibble: they deserve to be in good condition, to be fed, to be loved, and to have a safe place to call home…”
