Animal Webaction visited the site 05 March 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
"I have 182 cats under my care at the shelter and lately the number of cats that need help is exploding, there are still far too many abandonments... Most of the shelter's cats have been rescued in very poor condition, often critical, from victims of accidents to raging viral epidemics.
Sadly, with fewer and fewer resources and donations, it is very difficult to continue caring for and feeding so many cats. Besides, facing the imminent lack of kibble, I am forced to reduce the rescue actions... It was already hard before inflation to get kibble, but now, it's even worse!
I've been rationing for a few months now and there are only a couple of days left before the last kibble runs out... The cats don't eat enough, their immunity drops and they get sick! The weakest ones will not recover... I am very worried and desperate: the outcome will be dramatic for the shelter's cats if this kibble campaign fails!"
"Lilly is a young cat who has just arrived at the shelter. She was on the verge of death when we managed to rescue her: she was trapped in a machine that shredded her leg... She arrived in an absolute state of emergency. Lilly is under intensive care, but due to the extent of her injuries, she will need to be amputated.
If she is to be kept alive and cope well with her treatments and surgery, it is imperative that she gets enough to eat! The risk of haemorrhage and infection is very high in her case, so this delivery is essential given her critical condition..."
"With the association, we take care of more than 200 cats in different parts of Marrakech and their number increases enormously: abandoned cats are rarely sterilised and reproduce very quickly, outside! We do our best to sterilise and vaccinate those we find, but we are quickly overwhelmed; there are too many of them...
In the street, cats suffer from diseases, mistreatment, traffic accidents and above all, hunger... This is our greatest difficulty, as finding kibble is a serious recurring problem. Unfortunately, I have reached the end of my kibble stock, I have nothing left to give them, apart from some leftover food, occasionally...
It's clearly unsuitable for them and the cats are starving and sick... Even if some cats are fed by good people, times are very hard for everyone! Kibble is getting more and more expensive and people can only donate less and less... As for me, I will no longer be able to feed them at all if this campaign fails..."
"In the past, the association could count on my activity in tourism, but the latter has come to a halt... It is very complicated to find the necessary resources, we receive very few donations and we keep getting into debt to finance our actions: we have debts with the kibble suppliers, with the veterinarian and even to pay the costs related to the shelter's functioning!
We relentlessly focus on the issue of kibble supply, sometimes to the detriment of other actions essential to the survival of the cats! This winter, there were many cases of coryza to be treated, some cats even had to be enucleated... That's a lot of costs, but these very contagious viruses are decimating the cat population!
Despite our requests for support or partnerships, no other organisation can help us; unfortunately they are all overwhelmed with requests... The context is so hard, I can't see how we can refocus on rescues and care without this campaign! It is vital to ensure that the cats are fed..."
"For a long time I have had a strong sensitivity towards animals. To me, they are living beings who deserve to live and eat properly as much as humans do... But I have to admit that it is not easy, when struggling financially. The current economic context is so unfavourable that it has even impacted the number of adoptions, which has really plummeted... People who have families can no longer look after them properly, so taking care of an animal is not even considered anymore!
Besides, there are always people who are not very favourable to our cause and who do not understand the stakes of animal protection... What we do is however essential for the abandoned animals here! For almost 10 years, we have saved a great number of cats from suffering a horrible death on the street... And our rescues and sterilisations of cats help to regulate the stray population. But it's disheartening to constantly have to ask for help just to keep these cats alive! I've worked so hard to create this shelter and help the animal cause... it would be the worst disappointment, if it all came to an end!"
