Animal Webaction visited the site 11 March 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“At the shelter, there are 500 dogs to care for… Although we manage to find some of them homes through adoptions, other dogs in distress keep arriving, so the number of dogs in our care remains the same - it’s definitely overcrowded! And it’s extremely challenging to meet so many dogs’ needs, considering our huge financial struggles…
Right now, our biggest issue is the lack of resources, especially when it comes to kibble: our only option is to try and feed the dogs with the cheapest type of kibble! The quality is so low the dogs aren’t eating their fill. They are so weak and hungry that fights happen very often out of nervousness, resulting in injuries and even deaths… This is a disaster!
We only have enough kibble for a couple days now and I’m worried sick about what will happen after that… I have a real bond with each one of these dogs, I’m so sad to see them getting weaker and fighting to death! I won’t bear to find another dog getting hurt or killed… This campaign's success is crucial; at this stage, it's a matter of life or death for our dogs!”
“Although we try our best to ensure that all the dogs at the shelter are fed, we currently don't have enough kibble left to give them as much as they need… Besides, the low quality has effects on the dogs, they are losing a lot of weight and strength. The most submissive dogs don't manage to eat enough, so many of our dogs become increasingly vulnerable...
Whereas, fights out of resource guarding instincts are very frequent and sadly, some of these have already led to dogs dying from their wounds… We're constantly on the alert to avoid these dreaded situations, but things can escalate so quickly that we have not been able to prevent tragedies from happening during some fights. It's nerve-wracking...
What is the point of rescuing dogs in need if it means they’ll end up starving or fighting at the shelter?! It's so hard for me to see our dogs suffering, when our main goal is to keep them safe, healthy and give them a happy life! I don’t want to imagine the outcome if this campaign fails… Our most fragile dogs will be the first to die, either from diseases or fatal wounds.”
“We found Jenny in a field, where she had been abandoned along with her very young puppies… She was starving while still nursing her babies. Her energy is extremely low and she’s too puny, which puts her life at risk knowing she has to feed her babies too!
I can tell she feels very sad and lethargic, lately… I worry a lot about her, she’s so fragile and the fact she breastfeeds her puppies drains a lot of strength from her. The success of this campaign is absolutely vital for her and her babies, she needs way more nutrients and strengths than she currently gets.”
“We used to get more donations, but that has changed. Inflation has affected everyone, and it's harder to ask for money these days… Fewer and fewer people can donate, while there are more and more dogs to take care of, so it's becoming harder to fund the shelter's expenses… The current financial situation is very precarious.
Our fundraisers no longer allow us to reach the amounts of money that we need. We’re lucky to have some of our dogs being sponsored by people in France, who send a monthly amount of money. There’s also an existing partnership between the association and a website that sells medals and gives us a small percentage of their earnings… Yet, we’re still struggling.
The municipality sends some kibble bags every few months, but we never receive the necessary quantities to feed all of our dogs. Therefore, we have to try and make up for this lack on our own, which is growingly arduous... It's not easy to accept that we are going to be unable to provide our dogs with everything they need. There’s a constant uncertainty regarding our ability to feed the dogs…”
“I have been working with dog shelters for 12 years now, both in France and as a volunteer in other countries. I have been in Romania for 2.5 years and it is a place that truly needs help from everyone! The shelter's biggest accomplishment, according to me, is that we have saved thousands of dogs. Every dog we save from a terrible fate is a victory! On the streets, there are sadly still many stray dogs everywhere, and yet we try to sterilise as many as possible... But even with all the work we do, the situation seems hopeless at times.
It's disheartening to see so many dogs in need and to feel powerless to change the situation! But the poor dogs that I see every day keep me motivated to continue helping them; they all deserve comfort and a less hostile environment. It's important for people to support our actions because the dogs’ situation will never change, otherwise. Everyone has to do their part to break this endless cycle of shelters’ overpopulation and constant abandonment! Our shelter is unable to carry all the weight alone… We are truly thankful to all the people who will help us with this campaign!”
