Animal Webaction visited the site 13 March 2023 and confirms the situation described below.
“With 140 dogs, my shelter has reached its maximum capacity. Although some adoptions are happening, other rescue dogs keep coming in all the time… The abandonment rate is constant, which is exacerbated by people massively leaving Bosnia and their pets behind. And as Spring arrives, I also expect a huge surge in the abandonment of puppies - a lot of them will be left at the shelter’s gates, as it’s usually the case at this season, unfortunately! I feel miserable as I worry a lot when it comes to continuing to take care of and feed so many dogs…
Currently, I feed them with mediocre kibble which I mix with bread and occasionally some leftovers, to try and make up for the lack of nourishment they get from the kibble. It’s far from ideal for them! The shelter’s funds are running low, so it’s increasingly hard to feed the dogs: prices have at least doubled, I no longer receive Government subsidies and donations are clearly getting fewer and fewer! The constant concern about the kibble supply issue makes me sleepless, it is too overwhelming emotionally and physically…”
”My ability to get kibble is always uncertain and very limited, I never manage to build up a sufficiently lasting stock of it. Besides, I can never afford a decent quality and it definitely has nasty effects on the dogs! Indeed, by eating such poor-quality food, it's sadly not unusual for the dogs to get diarrhoea and fail to gain weight… Most of my shelter’s dogs are particularly fragile and this kibble issue puts their health at risk even further! Many are already weak, skeletal and struggle to put on their healthy weight…
This situation is a source of deep anxiety for me… I can't stop worrying about my dogs' well-being. That's why this kibble campaign is so important for all of us! If it fails, I’ll completely run out of kibble and the consequences will be terrible: it won't just mean more sleepless nights and stress for me, but it will also mean that all my dogs will end up very sick and experience extreme weight loss. I’m afraid the most vulnerable ones will be the hardest hit…”
“Dasa has been at the shelter for a while now. The other members of her family (siblings, mother) either died or got adopted. She’s a solitary, calm and shy dog, which might be the reason why she never got noticed by a potential adoptant, so far…
She’s ageing and her general state of health isn’t great: she spends most of her days lying around as her ankles are hurting her. Her sight and hearing are also declining…
I care about her a lot, we’ve known each other for a long time and now, all I want for her is to keep going, peacefully… She really needs this kibble delivery to prevent any further health issues that might deeply affect her daily life.”
“When I started this shelter, I’d go door to door and ask for donations or kibble… I begged my friends and acquaintances to help me fund kibble and vet care for the dogs. Nowadays, I rarely get any kibble bags or canned food. My only regular supporter is a Dutch organisation that helps me in any way they can (adoptions, sponsoring), but times are really hard for them too!
It's getting harder to cover the shelter's expenses due to the global crisis: I have less donations but bigger expenses! Besides, I’m heavily indebted to the vet and to the kibble supplier as well… And I know I can’t finance these costs on credit endlessly! These debts and how to manage them are also one of the many problems that keep me awake at night…
Locally, no one wants to help or doesn't have the money to do so. Without the State subsidies, it’s very tough and although I've tried to find new collaborations and solutions, no one seems to want to help or to be able to do so… This campaign is the last resort for my dogs’ sake and my own.”
“The shelter is here to help and rescue stray dogs; we save their lives and offer them better conditions than outside… But my heart breaks every day when I think that some of my dogs might never know anything else but life at the shelter, waiting for someone to adopt them… It's the worst part of running a shelter - the hopelessness of some dogs, who will never get a chance to experience the love and care they deserve. It’s tragic… I do my best to get dogs adopted, but it's not easy: organising adoptions in Bosnia is very complicated… There's a lot of bureaucracy to deal with, it's frustrating!
I don't have any volunteers, only 3 employees... It's not easy to manage everything on my own, given my health issues, especially when there are so many dogs to take care of! I try to educate children about animal welfare, and adults about the importance of sterilising pets… I think my efforts aren’t in vain, yet, there are still many people here who just don’t care about animal protection; it’s still quite obvious knowing how badly mistreated stray dogs are… Despite the importance of our actions towards dogs, the local authorities seem to have given up on us and the dogs…”
